- From FindaGrave:
Clockmaker and blacksmith. Clocks made by him can still be purchased today. He made the clock in the Congregational Church in Newton and "whoever looks upon its face may read, 'John Rogers, Newton, made it and gave it.'" He also made machines and was an "ingenious man" according to Jackson (History of Newton Mass.)
He was born in about 1724. His parents are not known. According to some sources, he was born May 9, 1724, in Boston, Mass., and was the son of Gamaliel Rogers and Mercy Emms. However, the there is no proof that the John born in Boston and John Rogers of Newton were the same person, and it seems unlikely that they were. Indeed there is no evidence connecting this John Rogers born in Boston and John Rogers of Newton, other than the fact that John of Newton was born at a similar time.
The history of Newton, by Jackson, does not give his parents names, but it does state that John was a descendant of John Rogers the martyr who was burned at the stake. If true, his would indicate a descent from Rev. Nathaniel Rogers of Ipswich, who was said to be a descendant of John the martyr. More research is needed.
