| 80512 | Sumner E. Hall, aged 76 years, died at his home just north of Bentonville Thursday morning, Dec. 15, 1932 following a long illness. Mr. Hall suffered a stroke of paralysis two or more years ago and had been confined to his bed since then. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Nazarene Sunday afternoon. His pastor, Rev. W.O. Felts, conducted the services. Burial was made in the Bentonville cemetery. Mr. Hall was born near Hartford, Conn. June 12, 1856. When a young man he moved to Ames, Iowa where he met and married Mary E. Cunningham in 1881. To them were born nine children, six boys and three girls, all of whom are living in as many different states. The family moved to Dalhart, Texas and in 1913 moved to Bentonville. Mrs. Hall passed away in 1924. About two years later he married Mrs. Somers who faithfully administered to him during his long illness. Mr. Hall lived a life of useful service to his church, family and community until he was stricken. She was a homemaker and a mother of one son, Leonard. Sylvia enjoyed coloring and solving word puzzles. Survivors include one son, one sister-in-law, one granddaughter and nieces and nephews. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Maitland, 2 brothers Theodore and Hollis, two sisters Doris and Bernice and daughter-in-law Joyce Brimacomb. There will be no visitation. Sylvia was born on May 11, 1938, as an identical twin in Concord, N.H., to Gordon K. and Barbara L. (Cousens) Hall. She graduated From Manchester High School Central in 1957, Then studied for her nursing degree at Barrington College (later merged into Gordon College) in Barrington R.I. She performed her student nursing working at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover N.H., while there she meet her future Husband Ivan (Ike) Melton, who was stationed at Pease Air Force Base, they meet while attending a local church. Sylvia and Ike would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in August. They raised two daughters, Kimberly (Thomas) Higgs of Westlake, Ohio, Manchester, and Kelley (Michael) Garvin, Land O'Lakes, Wisconsin. She had seven awesome grandchildren and 15 phenomenal great-grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart. In her career lifetime, Sylvia worked as a brainwave technician at Sacred Heart Hospital, served at several area nursing homes and worked as a private duty nurse. She had worked at Calvary Christian School, And in her final years as a school aide in Derry. She was known for her bubbly personality and was affectionately called Nana and Aunt Syl by many. She was predeceased by her parents, her twin sister Shirley and her niece. Due to COVID-19 a memorial service will be planned at a later date. | 80550 | Taft was born in Northbridge, Massachusetts, on February 14, 1823, and was educated at Worcester Academy, where he graduated in 1872. His parents were Orsmus Taft and Margaret (Smith) Taft; on October 31, 1850, he married Mary Frances Armington. They had four children. He belonged to the Republican Party, and was an elected member of Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1880-84 before his term as governor. Taft was a member of the firm Bradford & Taft, wool dealers, from which he retired in 1885. He was also president of Merchants' National Bank from 1868[3] president of the Boston & Providence Railroad, and a director of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (which took control of the B&P in 1893). In 1890 he became a charter member of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He served as the Society's president from 1897 to 1899. He died June 4, 1912, at his home in Providence, Rhode Island. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living ex-governor of Rhode Island. He is interred at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. He was a patron of the arts, with a large private collection; parts of his collection are now part of various institutions such as the Rhode Island School of Design.
