72654 O'Shea is included in the list of fifty most numerous surnames in Ireland with an estimated number of nearly twelve thousand persons so called, if we include Shea, Shee and O'Shee, (Variants of the same name) in the total. In Irish it is O Seaghdha, I.e. descendant of Seaghdha: this word means hawk-like and hence dauntless. The O'Sheas are primarily a Kerry sept. They were Lords of Iveragh but their power declined there from the twelfth century onwards, though not their numbers, for it is there that the great majority of O'Sheas are found even at the present day. Some of the lading members of the sept migrated to Co. Tipperary and we find Odoneus O'Shee recorded as Lord of Sheesland in Co. Tipperary in 1381. In the next century their sphere of influence moved to the adjoining county of Kilkenny: Robert Shee was Sovereign (I.e. Chief burgess) of the city of Kilkenny in 1499, and the well known family, now represented by the Poer O'Shees of Gardenmorris and Sheestown, Co. Kilkenny, come into prominence there about that time. Of the so-called Ten Tribes of Kilkenny the Shees (the only ones of Milesian blood), were the most influential; the Rothes and the Archers were next in importance (the others were Archdekin, Cowley, Knaresborough, Langton, Lawless, ley and Ragget). The form Shee and O'Shee is based on the anglified pronunciation of Shea (cf. O'Dea and Dee) and is not met with often outside Co. Kilkenny. Sir William Shee (1804-1868), M.P. for Kilkenny was the first Catholic judge in Ireland since the Revolution of 1690. Capt. Robert O'Shea was a devoted follower of Prince Charlie and was with him at Culloden. He was an officer of the Irish Brigade in France. At least five others of the name (O'Shee in France) were distinguished officers. The son of one of them became a peer of France. Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769-1850) was the President of the Royal Irish Academy (London) for twenty years. Daniel Shee (1777-1836) was an orientalist who was expelled from Dublin University for refusing to give evidence against his friends among the United Irishmen. John Dawson Gilmary O'Shea (1824-1892) was an American historian of note, whose father, a leader in Irish-American affairs, went to the U.S.A. in 1815. The murder of the twelve year old boy Denis Shea in 1851 is a shocking commentary on the evils of landlordism at that period. The name O'Shea is of course intimately associated with the fall of Parnell.

Thomas W. Hall, 86, dies; wx-Naval officer, historian

SMITHFIELD -- Ret. Naval Cmdr. Thomas W. Hall, 86, of Putnam Pike, a former baseball player, historian, teacher, naval officer, raiser of English setters and genealogy enthuiast, died yesterday in the Veterans Administration Hospital after a seven-month illness. He was the husband of Florence (Farrier) Hall.

When Mr. Hall, who once described himself as one who "lived so much history," was asked last year how he accomplished so much, he declared, "You make the time, you manage it."

A graduate of Brown University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in history, Mr. Hall specialized in the American Revolution and the role the French colonies played in securing freedom for the colonies.

He had served on a committee formed by Governor Garrahy to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Comte de Rochambeau's landing in Newport and worked with Smithfield's 250th Anniversary Committee last year.

A sought-after lecturer, Mr. Hall had been a member of national and local chapters of the Huguenot Society.

He was president of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and a governor of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America.

As a young man, he played baseball in high school and at Brown. He later became semi-professional, turning down an offer to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He said he stayed in the semi-pros long enough to earn the money to buy land in Greenville, where built a house for his mother in 1931.

Later, he and his wife moved into the house, where he and his family raised prize winning English setters.

He was president of the English Setter Association of America and estimated that for about 10 years, he and his family averaged 50,000 miles a year traveliing to dog shows.

A man of many careers, Mr. Hall had worked as a teacher at Mount Pleasant High School and in New York City. He was also a member of the New York Univeristy athletic staff.

For more than 20 years, Mr. Hall was in the Navy on active duty and as a reservist. In addition, he was a naval liaison officer, speaking for the Navy's public relations department.

Mr. Hall's naval career, which began while he was at Brown, spanned both world wars. He was president of the Brown University Navy Club for nine years.

Born in North Providence, he was a son of the later George M. and Lucy (Merrill) Hall.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas W. Hall, Jr. of Foster; two daughters, Marsha Brown of Lafayette, Calif., and Bethany Mason of Yardley, Pa., nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held in Providence on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Manning Chapel at Brown University.

72696 Olivia Remie Constable June 13, 1960 - April 16, 2014

SOUTH BEND - Remie Constable, 53, died peacefully at home on April 16. A native of Boston, Remie was the daughter of the late Evhy (Young) Constable and of Giles Constable.

She moved to South Bend in 1995 to take up a position as a professor of medieval history at the University of Notre Dame, where since 2008 she has been the Robert M. Conway Director of the Medieval Institute. Remie was a scholar of international reputation in her field, yet she wore her learning lightly and was always approachable for students and colleagues and for those she got to know socially or through her hobby of horseback riding.

She is survived by her husband Matthew Bell and sons Owen and Sam, by her father Giles and stepmother Patricia Woolf of Princeton, NJ, and by her brother John of Fresno, CA.

Her family is deeply grateful for support from so many quarters during Remie's illness and also appreciates the many colleagues, students, friends, and family who sent her personal messages from near and far, evidence of the affection she inspired and the sense of loss at her passing. Memorial arrangements are pending.

In light of Remie's pronounced fondness for manatees, her family asks that donations in her memory be made to Save the Manatee Club, 500 N. Maitland Ave, Maitland, FL 32751, 800 432-5646, www.savethemanatee.org.
