Mr. Hardee was born March 2, 1919, in Florence, S.C., son of the late Abram and Cornelia (Covington) Hardee. He graduated from Emory College and Harvard Law School and worked in private practice in Boston and New York. During the 1940s and 1950s, he was a professor at Harvard Law School. Mr. Hardee was a former chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Lincoln Savings Bank of New York, a member and former chairman of the board of directors of New Milford Hospital, and a former chairman of the New Milford Hospital Foundation. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a Knight of the Order of St. John and had lived in Washington since 1960. Besides his wife, Mr. Hardee is survived by four sons, John Lamont, Brian and Scott Schereschewsky and William; eight daughters, Pam Jackson, Thrae Dulhin, Robin Swensen, Felicity Barry, Nell Nicholas, Meredith Templin, Catherine Charles and Laura Doty; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Nov. 12 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington. The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements. | 71974 | Mr. Leonard Barrows was both a farmer and a carpenter. After he was married, his father gave him the souteast one third of his farm situated one mile west of the Spring Hill Baptist Churtch in the town of Mansfield, CT. On this farm of about sixty-five acres he built a good and substantial house and barn, where he lived while he remained in Mansfield. About the year 1866, he sold this farm and with his family, moved to Hickoryport, Grundy County, MO. After purchasing land, he erected a hours and other buildings where he lived the remainder of his life. He died of pneumonia, Oct 20, 1886, aged 65 yeras. He was buried in the Antiock Cemetery in North Missouri. After his death, his widow lived with her daughter, Mrs. Flora (Barrows) Brown in Inman, KS where she died Oct 18, 1904, aged 84 years. Cote. A Florida resident for only six months, she was a lifetime resident of Raynham, having lived for the past 25 years in Pine Hill Estates. She was a graduate of Taunton High School. For more than 25 years Mrs. Cote worked as an operator and clerk for the former New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Raynham Council on Aging. Mrs. Cote served in the U. S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 as a communications specialist in the Office of the Vice Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC. Her military rank was that of communications specialist, first class. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Raynham (Stone Church). Mrs. Cote leaves two daughters, Barbara Roy and her husband Roger of New Port Richey, Fla., and Margaret "Peggy" Cote and her husband Gary Arnott of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a brother and his wife, George and June Hall of Naples, Fla.; four grandchildren, Myra Baroni, Aaron Baroni, Michael Roy and Matthew Roy; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Camara and Juliana Baroni. She was the long-time companion of the late Ralph Isenor of Raynham. Her funeral service was held Wednesday, July 23 in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. in Taunton. Mrs. Hall was born Aug. 4, 1959, in Woonsocket, R.I., daughter of Claudette (Turgeon) Guindon of Florida and the late Myles Alexander. She was raised in Smithfield, R.I. She had lived in Manchester since 1990, previously living in Litchfield. She was married to Kenneth I. Hall of Manchester for almost 23 years. Mrs. Hall worked for several years at Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine in Derry and at the time of her death, worked as the office manager of Ahern & Nichols Family Dentistry in Derry. She was very supportive of, and inspirational to, her family. A troop committee member of Boy Scout Troop 290 at St. Pius X Church, she was a former director of Manchester East Soccer League and a former treasurer of the Weston School PTA. Mrs. Hall loved skiing and hiking and especially enjoyed attending and supporting her children's sporting events. She graduated from Smithfield High School in 1977. She was also graduated from Bryant College in 1979. Besides her mother and husband, survivors include a son, Alex A. Hall of Manchester; a daughter, Jessica L. Hall of Manchester; her stepfather, Ernie Guindon of Florida; a brother, Kevin Austin, of Providence, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Mayer was taken ill July 4 with kidney trouble and since then has been constantly failing and very seriously ill. She became ill on her birthday, the day she was seventy seven years of age. Magdalene Effinger was born in Wurtenburg, Germany, in 1934. She was there married to Joseph Mayer in October, 1859, and lived in Germany until 1869 when with their children they came to this county. They located at once in Austin wihich has been their home ever since with the exception of a few years spent in Kansas City, Mo. To Mr. and Mrs. Mayer were born eleven children, six of whom are living; M. J .Mayer, Joseph Mayer Jr., Mrs. Susie Glassel and Miss Theresa Mayer residing in Austin; Joh Mayer of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Bradbury of Oakland, California. She leaves beside her children, her husband, one brother living in Walla Walla, Wash., seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Mayer was a member of St. Augustine's church and also a member of the Rosary society of that church. She was a devoted Christian and a willing worker for her church. She will be missed not only by her family but by those for whom she was ever willing to do a kind and friendly act. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from the residence on East Water street and at 9:30 from St. Augustine's church. She was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of the late Harold Tower and Louise True Tower. Preceding her in death are her parents and her husband, Robert Merrill Hall, who shared her life until his death in 1995. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a county extension service agent in Massachusetts. During WWII she was a milk inspector in Seattle, Wash. She worked for a short time as an undercover investigator for Pinkerton's and as a substitute teacher. Mrs. Hall was a member of Euharlee Presbyterian Church and was a club agent in 4-H in Massachusetts. She had a love for horses and other animals. Surviving Mrs. Hall are two sons and daughter-in-law, Kenneth L. and Lana Hall, Norman L. Hall, three daughters-and sons-in-law, S. Jeanne Hall and Sherwin Kamin, Bettilou Hall Shieh and Wen K. Born Sept. 26, 1899, in Sandisfield, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Georgia White Loring. Folllowing her marriage to Arnold B. Hale, on March 26, 1924, she moved to Tyringham. She was a member of the Union Church, the Eastern Star Lodge of Lee and Pomona, state and national Granges, and a 50-year member of the Lee Grange. She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Donald B. Hale of Tyringham; two daughters, Miss Alice M. Hale and Mrs. Mary C. Hale, both of Tyringham; five brothers, John Loring of Lee, Fred Loring of Tyringham, Charles Loring of Otis, Albert Loring of East Chatham, N.Y., and Herbert Loring of Hollywood, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Baylis of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Frederick Miner of Otis and Mrs. Manuel Sousa of North Dartmouth; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. | 71984 | Mrs. Blanca Noel Taft lost a courageous two year battle against cancer Friday '96 just 29 years and one day after her marriage to U.S. Rep. Robert Taft Jr. At her bedside when death came at about 1:30 a.m. their Indian Hill home were the congressman, their older daughter, Mrs. Winfield (Sarah) Jones, New York City, and Mrs. Taft's mother, Mrs. John Neegard, New York City. Mrs. Taft, 51, underwent surgery for amputation of her right arm above the elbow, May 21, 1966 at Holmes Hospital. Cancer had been detected a short time earlier in tissue taken from a cyst that developed on her wrist. Friends said at the time that she was cheerful and determined to resume a normal life. In the months that followed Mrs. Taft went back to many of her former pursuits, including golfing, driving and gardening that had been one of her lifelong loves. She insisted on doing much of the cooking and other housewifely chores at their unpretentious home, 4300 Drake Road, Indian Hill. Early this year she suffered a recurrence of the cancer, according to Ron Aaron, press secretary to Mr. Taft. Even though her condition deteriorated steadily, Mrs. Taft insisted that her husband spend as much time as possible at his work in Congress. He had been returning here each weekend, and, finally, came home to Cincinnati at noon Thursday. Their three other children are Robert A. Taft II, 26, who is with the Agency for International Development in Saigon, Deborah Taft, 21, who is attending summer classes at the University of Pennsylvania, and Jonathan D. Taft, 14, away at summer camp. Mrs. Jones is 25. Mrs. Taft had remarked to friends that she and her husband had known each other since they were three years old. Although from different cities, they became acquainted when their families maintained summer residences at Murray Bay. Mr. Taft is the son of the late U.S. Senator and Mrs. Robert Taft of Cincinnati. Mrs. Taft's father, Louis Noel of New York City, died several years ago. Her mother has since remarried. Thursday was the Taft's 29th wedding anniversary. They were married June 27, 1939 in New York. He entered law school the following autumn at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Mrs. Taft was educated at the Brearley and Ethel Walker Schools and at Bryn Mawr College. Mrs. Taft was a friendly, gracious and charming hostess. "She was strictly a wife and mother," a Taft staff member said Friday. "She appreciated life more than anyone I ever knew," said another staff member. "She never had any complaints. She always was just great." | 71985 | Mrs. Brundage Memorial Held Memorial services for Amittai Ostrander Brundage of Washington, D.C., and Pompano Beach, Fl., were held last Wednesday in the Bethlehem Chapel of the Washington National Cathedral. She died Monday, Jan. 3, in Washington Hospital Center. Mrs. Brundage, a one-time Montclair resident, was the wife of Percival Flack Brundage, a former director of the United States Bureau of the Budget and a former senior partner of Price, Waterhouse, and Co. Born in New York City, Mrs. Brundage lived there after her marriage in 1920 and in West Newton, Ma., after coming to Montclair. Since 1954, she and Mr. Brundage resided in Washington, D.C., and Pompano Beach, Fl. Mrs. Brundate was chairman of a large hospitality committee which entertained more than 15,000 servicemen from Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the British empire in their homes in Montclair during World War II. She had also served as a hospitality chairman in the Brooklyn Navy Yar. She was instrumental in placing many refugees from the blitz in England and Europe in Montclair Homes for the duration of the war. Following the war, the British Consulate General of New York presented Mrs. Brundage with the King's Medal for service in the cause of freedom. She was also commended by the prime minister of the Commonwealth of Australia for her service to Australian servicement during the war and her "contribution towards the cause of good will and understanding between the people of Australia and those of the United States of America." Mrs. Brundage was a founder member of Overseas Neighbors of Montclair, a former trustee of the Montclair Art Museaum and a member of the Women's National Republican Club of New York. She was a member of the International Neighbors Club in Washington, D.C., a director of the International Student House, an associate member of the American Newspaper Women's Club, and a member of the Selgrave and Chevy Chase Clubs. She was active in and a former president of the Montclair Cosmopolitan Club, The Unitarian Church, and the Unitarian Service Committee in New York. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brundage is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lois B. She left here with her son in 1912 when Foster Hall moved to Spokane. The remains will be brought to Lewiston and the funeral will be held at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday from the Episcopal church. | 71990 | Mrs. Elizabeth Hoover-Hill Mrs. Elizabeth Cooke Hoover-Hill, 52, of Rocky Ridge, Lil or Lillie as known by her family and friends, passed away quietly at her home, after a long illness, next to her husband, along with their ex son-in-law and friend Steve, on Monday, June 25, 2007. Born June 17, 1955, in Washington, D.C., she was the third child of the late William and Elizabeth Randolph Cooke Hoover. She was a 1973 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville. Lil had worked in the newspaper business for more than 25 years, including the Sentinel, Advertiser, Jewish Weekly, and most recently as circulation director of the Journal newspapers. She was an avid photographer and very family oriented, she always ran all of the family functions. Survivors are her husband for more than 30 years, Gregory A. Hill of Rocky Ridge; two stepdaughters, Leslie Ann Hill of Fairfield, Pa., and Stephanie Lea Hyde and husband Rodney of Hampstead; a sister, Anne Bland of Emmitsburg; six grandchildren, Danielle "Dee Dee" Hoover, Katelynn Meyers, Rachel Hoover, Benjamin Meyers, Nicholas Howarth and Dalton Ahman Calimer; three nieces, Jennifer Hoover-Gardner, Nicole Elizabeth DeMambro and Sarah Bland and son Christopher; and ex-son-in- law and close friend Steven N Calimer. She was preceded in death by a brother Conway Hoover. Lil was loved by all who knew her and spent her life helping others. Mrs. Hoover-Hill is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. | 71996 | Mrs. Joseph Mayer Mrs. Joseph Mayer, aged 77 years died Saturday evening, July 22, 1911, at her home on east Water Street of Kidney trouble after a brief illness. Magdaline Effinger was born in Wurterburg, Germany, and was married there to Joseph Mayer in October 1859. In 1869, they came to this country with their children, locating in Austin and the home has since been here, with the exception of several years spent in Kansas City. Six children survive: M. J. Mayer, Joseph Mayer, Jr., Mrs. Susie Glassel and Miss Theresa Mayer of Austin; John Mayer, of Kansas City and Mrs. Mary Bradbury of Oakland, Cal. The husband, also, survives. Funeral services were held at St. Augustine's church yesterday forenoon. | 72000 | Mrs. May Hall Dies at Socorro SOCORRO, Jan. 14 (AP) Mrs. May Exter Hall, wife of the postmaster at Magdalena, died this morning at the New Mexico Institute of Mines Hospital. She was 62. Mrs. Hall suffered a heart attack Thursday and was taken to the hospital. She was born in Kelly, N. M., a mining community four miles from Magdalena, and spent her life there and in Magdalena. She married A. M. Hall, postmaster, in 1914 and was prominent in civic affairs. Survivors include two brothers, Albert Exter, owner of the Exter Mortuary in Albuquerque, and Simeon Exter, Cincinnati, O.; a son, Nathan, of Magdalena; daughter, Mrs. Jake Scott of Reserve; two grandsons and three granddaughters. The Very Rev. L. W.
