| 14960 | Bathsheba, the daughter of Jeremiah Hall and Dorothy (Hill) his wife was born August ye 12, 1726. (Wrentham, Mass. Vital Records.) About 1746, probably in Upper Ashuelot (Keene, NH), Bathsheba married Ebenezer Day, but their marriage record apparently did not survive the turbulent times on the frontier. (The birth of the first child for whom there is a record occurred on April 18, 1747 when Ebenezer was nearly 31 years old. Bathsheba would not reach her 21st birthday until August.) Ebenezer and Bathsheba's granddaughter, Almira Fenno-Gendrot, claimed that Bathsheba was the daughter of Jeremiah Hall. (Almira Torrey Blake Fenno-Gendrot, The Ancestry and Allied Families of Nathan Blake 3rd and Susan (Torrey) Blake, Early Residents of East Corinth, Vermont; Boston, Mass.:Stanhope Press, 1916, Reprint, Heritage Books, Inc., 2000.) Fenno-Gendrot did not cite her source but may have had access to a family Bible record. In any event, as a granddaughter interested in family history, she probably would have known Bathsheba's maiden name. | Hall, Bathesheba (I2451)

| 14990 | Benjamin Hall was commissioned Lieutenant by the Crown; his son Benjamin was probably also a Lieutenant; on a list of a company of foot soldiers in 1773, were Lt. Benjamin Hall, Samuel Hall, Jesse Hall and Ziba Hall; on the alarm list 1773, were Benjamin Hall, Jr. and Nathan Hall; among the signers of the Association Test of 1776, were Jesse Hall and Samuel Hall, but Lt. Benjamin Hall refused to sign it; Lt. Benjamin preserved a coat of arms. In 1785, among the purchasers of pews in the new meeting-house in Keene, were Benjamin Hall, Esq., Benjamin and Hannaniah Hall. In 1800, Dr. Ziba Hall protested against being taxed for support of the minister, being a Universalist (he lived one time in Lebanon). In 1789, Benjamin Hall, Esq., was on a committee in Winchenden to obtain materials for bulding a meeting-house, and Dr. Ziba Hall was on a committee to select the place or site for its location. Benjamin, along with the children known by name, also had a daughter whose name is not known at this time, who married Maj. Ames of the Rising Sun Hotel, Boston, MA. Lt Benjamin Hall and his sons James, Hannaniah, and Josiah, being tories, removed to Canada and settled near Toronto. He was a large man weighing some 400 lbs. The following is from the History of Keene, Biographical Sketches: "Lieut. Benjamin Hall. His name first appears in the records in 1761, when he bought of William Smeed and his wife Phebe (who had removed to Walpole), six original house-lots - numbers 12, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27 - and seventeen other lots of the several divisions of land in the township. He also owned, afterwards, house-lots numbered 16, 17, and 18 and much other land in town, amounting to several thousand acres. In 1768, he sold to Jesse Clark a farm of 100 acres 'lying in the crotch of Ash Swamp Brook,' where Mr. Clark and his son, Jesse, Jr., kept tavern for many years, and built the house west of the small pond, since known as the Ingersoll house. In 1783, he bought of Dr. Gideon Tiffany, then of Hanover, NH, a farm of sity acres, with saw and grist mills, on the North branch - the mills since known as the peg factory. "His wife's name was Melatiah, and his children were: Nathaniel, Ziba, Hannaniah, James, Benjamin, Josiah, Bela; and a daughter Betty, who married Maj. Luther Eames, who kept a public house with Aaron Eames. "Lieut. Hall was selectman nine years between 1762 and 1774, and again in 1784-5-6. He represented the town in the legislature in 1771-2-3-4, and again in 1784-5 and 1787. He was a lieutenant of the militia company here in 1773, but in 1776 he refused to sign the Association Test, and was dropped from all official positions. He was not, however, actrive against the patriots, was considered a man of sound judgment and discretion, and after the war was again entrusted with responsible offices, as appears above. He died in 1805." | Hall, Lieut. Benjamin (I431)

| 14991 | Benjamin Hall, of North Guilford, died last week, aged ninety-seven years, A short time before his death he remarked that although he had passed more than thirty-five thousand days on earth he had never seen a single sick day in all that time; also that he had never been so far home that he could not return before hight. He spoke freely on the subject of death, and said he expected to die with little consciousness of the event. His expectations were verified. | Hall, Benjamin (I16975)

| 14992 | BENJAMIN POLLARD (Plate XLIII) was a flourishing merchant and native of Boston, born about 1749, who declines considerable appointments in the American military forces in the Revolution, in which his brother, Jonathan, was apoointed Quartermaster-General to the American army at Boston and aide-de-camp to General Heath from October 2, 1776, to September, 1778. But he preferred a commision in the army of the King to the first place gift of the rebels. His younger brother was an officer [in 1780] in the Royal Navy, in Rodney's fleet. [This brother was doubtless George Pollard, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, May 7, 1762, and again in 1780] (Audit Office [A. O.] 13/49; A. O. 13/75.) Benjamin Pollard became an ensign in the 2nd battalion of De Lancey's Brigade, which he accompanied to Georgia in November, 1778, and participated in the capture of Savannah in December. He was killed in the defence of Savannah on October 4, 1779. In a schedule of Benjamin Pollard's property, the names of his parents, Benjamin and Margaret Pollard, are mentioned, and in a copy of evidence mention is made of his brothers and sisters: Jonathan, mentioned above; Margaret; Joshua, a loyalist, who died in 1783 or 1784; and Peter, who commanded an American privateer in the Revolution. (A.O. 13/49.) He left a widow, Hannah, a native of Boston, who went to live at Carmarthen in South Wales. (A.O. 12/81, f.46; A.O. 12/105, f. 108.) She claimed compensation, £1,572, and was allowed £200. (A.O. 12/109.) and was granted a pension of £30 until 1818, when she is presumed to have died. (T.50/8; T.50/25.) A portrait of Benjamin Pollard is in the possession of the Massachusetts Historical Society. | Pollard, Benjamin (I22939)

| 14996 | Benjamin was the son of Thomas Caswell and was a cousin of John, the husband of Mary's sister, Elizabeth. Mary and Benjamin had five children. Benjamin's father, Thomas Caswell, was born 22 Feb. 1651 in Taunton, MA, and married in about 1674 Mary Jones who was born about 1656 and died before 1691. Thomas married 2nd on 2 Dec. 1691 in Taunton Mary Ramsden/Remsdell. A Mayflower descendant article suggests that Mary Jones was the mother of Thomas's first five children and that Mary Ramsden/Ramsdell was the mother of the other ten. Thomas died in 1725 in Middleborough, MA. Thomas's siblings were Peter, Mary, John, and Sarah. All were born in Taunton. Peter's wife's name was Hannah. Mary married Israel Thrasher. John married Elizabeth Hall. Sarah married William Hoskins. | Caswell, Benjamin (I3199)

| 14997 | Benjamin Williams was the youngest son of Richard Williams, the emigrant who came to America in 1636 with his wife and two children. They first settled in Dorchester, removing soon after to Taunton, where the next seven children were born ending with Benjamin in 1651. By the will of his father, Benjamin Williams was given the following land as quoted from the will dated 5 May 1686 and probated 10 Oct 1693: "5thly To my son Benjamin his heirs & assigns for Ever I give my share of land in the north purchase with the other halph of my sd Division of Lands at Weegus .... "9thly To my two sons Thomas & Benjamin I bequeath my pasture with my barn thereupon Standing to be Equally Divided between them...." From the share of land in the North Purchase that Benjamin Williams inherited from his father in 1693, he took up land in 1700 on Mulberry Meadow Brook in the present town of Easton. Benjamin continued to live in Taunton.... After Benjamin Williams Sr.'s death in 1701 [his widow] Rebecca married Capt. James Leonard and moved to Raynham, Mass. where she died in 1738. | Williams, Benjamin (I64280)

| 14998 | Benson was born in Mendon, Massachusetts, the son of John Benson and Chloe Taft. His father moved to a farm in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, in 1817 where he lived for at least 16 of the next 18 years. Benson married Pamelia Andrus of Northbridge on January 1, 1832, at Uxbridge. They lived at Uxbridge for the next three years, between 1832 and 1835. Benson also had lived in Northbridge, on his sister's farm in 1830 and 1831. He and Pamelia had children, one of whom died at Uxbridge in 1833. Benson managed a hotel in the center of Uxbridge and made a considerable sum of money which he invested in a cotton mill at Holland, Massachusetts, before moving West. Benson and his wife were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on July 19, 1840, in Quincy, Illinois. He had moved to Quincy previously, and first met members of the church when they came there at the time they were driven out of Missouri. In April 1841, the Bensons moved to Nauvoo. Benson was ordained to the office of apostle on July 16, 1846. He replaced John E. Page in the Quorum of the Twelve. Benson arrived in the Salt Lake Valley as one of the first 148 Mormon settlers with the vanguard company of 1847, also known as the Brigham Young Pioneer Company. The company left Winter Quarters, Nebraska, on April 16, 1847, and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley between July 21 and July 24, 1847. Benson served as a church missionary in the United States and in the Sandwich Islands. Benson's first mission in the 1840s took him to his birthplace of Mendon, Massachusetts. On this journey he also preached in Chambersburg, Illinois. During his second mission, Benson was in New Jersey, serving with John Pack, when they received news of Joseph Smith's murder. From December 1844 to May 1845, Benson served a mission to New England, during which he served as president of the Boston Conference. Benson served in the Utah Territorial Legislature. | Benson, Ezra Taft I (I7973)
