Verna Frances Hopkins
January 22, 1930 - January 13, 2012

Verna Frances (Dillard) Hopkins passed away on May 13, 2012 at home in Lebanon, Maine following a long illness. She was 82.

Born in Bristol, VA on January 22, 1930, she was the daughter of Frank G. Dillard and Dorothy Blanche (Rowell) Dillard. Until the age of three, she lived in the Spartanburg and Cross Anchor, SC areas. She grew up in Swampscott, MA and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1947. Before her marriage, she worked for Hawkes Grinding Company and Sherman's Furniture, both in Swampscott.

In 1951, Verna married Richard T. Hopkins, also of Swampscott. In 1953, they purchased property in Lebanon, Maine and moved to their place on the hill, Windcrest Farm, full-time in 1967 following the birth of their daughter, Ruth Ellen.

Verna, known as the "Leather Lady," served as President of the Strafford County Craftsmen during the 1980s and exhibited her hand-carved leather work at area craft shows. She also served on the diaconate at the Milton Community Church and sang for a number of years in their choir. Verna was an election clerk for more than 30 years for the town of Lebanon for which she was honored in the dedication of the 2009 Lebanon Annual Report.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ellen (Jeffrey) Vaughn and grandchildren Anna, Abigail, Constance, and Alan of Farmington, NH; sisters Andrea K. Locke of Belton, SC and Grace G. Bohannon of Bufort, GA; first cousins Anna Katherine Gaudreau of Plano, TX, Mary Ann Stewart of Cross Anchor, SC, and Paul Langevin of Beverly Hills FL; sister-in-law Marguerite Hopkins of Plaistow, NH; several nephews and their families; dear friends Ruth Tremblay of Brookville, FL and Irene Cheney of Milton, NH; many wonderful and supportive neighbors; and her beloved Boston Terrier, Quincey, her last anniversary gift from her husband.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard T. Hopkins in 1999 after 47 years of marriage.

Cremation services will be provided by Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington, NH. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at her home on June 23, 2012 at 2pm. Jim Johnson of Justapreacher Ministries, Satellite Beach, FL will officiate.
