Hawkins was the third son of Nathaniel Hart and Martha Lee Hart and the widower of Abigail Hall Hart.
His Revolutionary War Service as a Lieutenant was in the CT 7th Company, Col. Douglas' Regiment which was said to have participated in the Battle of Long Island, also known as the Battle of Brooklyn or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, fought on August 27, 1776. It was a major victory for the British and a defeat for the forces commanded by General George Washington. His original burial was in Hill Cemetery, presumably now Barkhamsted Center Cemetery located on Center Hill Road.
Hawkins and Abagail were married February 12, 1761 and had 9 children:
Rebecca (November 23, 1761 - February 22, 1838- Married Joel Cook January 1, 1784),
Josiah Hall (June 3, 1764 - March 16, 1850 -- Married Phebe Hall January 14, 1790),
Hannah (September 20, 1766 -- married Joel Parker and moved to Ohio in about 1816),
Aaron (February 8, 1770 - June 9, 1851 -- married Annis Austin),
Hiel (July 25, 1772 -- married Parker),
Abagail (February 1, 1775 - February 20, 1775, aged 20 days),
Abagail, 2nd (June 8, 1778), Hawkins (January 28, 1781 -- married Lois Slade December 5, 1805),
Jerre (October 11, 1784 -- married Ives).
Hawkins was a carpenter and joiner. The family has a coffee table said to have been made with a piece of wood measuring 25x47x2 from the original house built by Hawkins after the family moved to Barkhamsted Hollow in 1789.
Hawkins and Abigail were admitted to the Barkhamsted Church of Christ on November1, 1789 from the First Church of Christ in Wallingford, CT.

The inscription is fading, but seems to read: Hawkins Hart Who Died May 26, 1824 88 years of His Age Abagail His Wife Who Died May 12, 1807 Lowest line unreadable
