"John Hughes is one of my brick walls... He was likely Welsh. As far as I know, they only had one child.

"There are many John Hughes/Hughs in Herkimer County around this time period. Some have been ruled out as the age would not seem appropriate to be marrying a young woman around 1880. There are potential John Hughes' in the towns of Schuyler, Manehim, Little Falls, Ohio, Herkimer and German Flatts in Herkimer County, Deerfield in Oneida County and mention of one in New York City.

"By 1883, Kittie, likely with Georgianna, had moved back to Rome, NY, and was living with her mom, step-father and brothers on 99 E. Dominick Street. It is unclear if Kittie was widowed or separated. No record of divorce was located in Herkimer County; Oneida's only recorded divorces commence in the 1900s and death records are spotty [the requirement to record births/marriages/deaths in New York was implemented in 1882 and in the early years many did not comply].

"I did hire a researcher in the area, several years ago, who did some work for me trying to sort out the John's to no avail. I think my best best is to go through the local Herkimer newspapers which unfortunately are not on Fulton History or at the Library of Congress. The microfilms are held at the historical society there.... I offered to pay them to look through the pages and they declined. I hope to get there one day, but my next genealogy trip is to Roseville, CA to scan boxes of Haines family letters and pictures held by a 90 year old 3rd cousin of my grandmother. I will be there in May...."

"Bob was the second of two children. He was 2 1/2 when he got his first hair cut; in the orchestra at Beebe Junior High School; J V Football Captain and track member at Malden High School and a baseball player for the Belmont Hill Teenage Club.
