From Linda (Hall) Little, Apr 2016:

"I suspect either her birth or her parent's marriage was recorded incorrectly in the vital records books causing Elizabeth to seem to be born before her parent's marriage. The birth date matches what is on her tombstone and when Elizabeth died 22 Jul 1886, the death record notes that she was age 76 years, 2 months, 4 days (if she was born in 1810 she'd be 76 years, 1 month, 4 days). The marriage entry does not capture a birth date/age.

"Elizabeth's father died at sea when she was just under 5. By 1830 her mother moved to Malden with the two girls. She never remarried, and I have found no relatives/associates that would have caused a move, looking at 50 people on either side of her on the census. In 1830 her mother was living with 1 male age 5-10, 3 females ages 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 and in 1840 she was living with 2 males (ages 15-20 & 20-30) - not sure who the two extras are in 1830 or the 2 boys in 1840.

"I do believe that Elizabeth Jones really was the mother - although possible, I don't think that 6 months is enough time for another Elizabeth to have died just after childbirth and him to have married a second Elizabeth.

"If you look at the marriages, looks like 1810's and 1809's were mixed in together, so maybe the page was copied and the copier mixed them up (or maybe the priest did)....

"I suspect the marriage was actually 1809 and that Elizabeth Jones was likely a few months pregnant but don't have records to prove anything...."

    From FindaGrave:

"Mary was born abt March 24, 1834 in Providence, Rhode Island (believe birth date on tombstone off by 2 yrs, based on age at marriage and census data - March 1832 date would put her birth a few days after her parents marriage).

"She married (at the First Baptist Church in Malden) a baker, on May 12, 1858 named David M. Patten who was born in Landale or Landaff (his father was John Patten and mother Nancy Ames). David worked at Warren Mansur's 637 Main St., Charlestown.

"In the census years 1850, 1870 and 1880 Mary is living in Malden with her parents Horatio Hall & Elizabeth Pinder, in 1870 and 1880 her husband David is also living with the family. Note that they are not found living with her parents in 1860 - they are living in Danvers (her 8 year old brother Ephraim is enumerated with her & David).

"In 1900 Mary (who has never given birth to a child) and David listed as head of household and a dealer have been husband and wife of 42 years and are living in Malden on 3 Richardson Ct. (the former home rented by her parents), with three boarders (Horatio Hall, Lucy M Hall her siblings & Alfeine F Beal). They are renters. David is a butter & egg dealer.

"There is no probate record for David. Elizabeth has an administration record on file at the Middlesex probate court. She had $1,400 is cash with was split amongst her living siblings, nieces and nephews (all named in the probate record)."

    "Malden Evening News:

"The funeral of Mrs. Anna A, wife of E A Hall of 315 Forest Street, a well known and esteemed resident, was held at her home yesterday afternoon. Rev M C Hunt, pastor of the Forestdale Chapel conducted the services. The house was filled with relatives and friends and Mrs Mina Rich Sargent was the soloist rendering "Face to Face" "Passing out of the Shadow" "My Heavenly Home" Resolute Rebekah lodge members attended the service in a body and the usual ritual of the order was conducted by the NG Mrs. D E Kelley; V G Mrs. H R Campbell and Chap, Mrs. F.A. Magee. There was a most beautiful profusion of floral tributes from friends and relatives. The interment was at Forestdale.

"Odd Fellows, recognizing the need for a woman's touch and her helpfulness in carrying out the principles of Odd Fellowship, brought into being the Rebekah degree, founded upon the principles of faithfulness, hospitality, purity and dedication to the principles of the Order as portrayed by women characters of the Bible.

"REBEKAH CREED I AM A REBEKAH:
I believe in the Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of man, and the Sisterhood of woman.
I believe in the watch-words of our Order -
    Friendship, Love and Truth.

"Friendship - is like a golden chain that ties our hearts together. Love - is one of our most precious gifts, the more you give, the more you receive. Truth - is the standard by which we value people. It is the foundation of our society.

"I believe that my main concern should be my God, my family and my friends. Then I should reach out to my community and the World, for in God's eyes we are all brothers and sisters.

They and son Charles owned a farm in Wilmington, Massachusetts that at it's height had 102 dogs - the state took the property by eminent domain to build a school. They raced the dogs at Longwood and other tracks around Florida in the winter months but owned no property there."

    "May 27, 2008 by Charles Milton's grandson:

This is my attempt to write something of my memory of Charles Milton Hall. He was a particular favorite of my mother (Edith) and she told me many stories about him. Some of the stories may have become enhanced as family folklore, but it is absolutely true that he cast a particularly long shadow within the family.

"He was looked up to by both my mother and father as well as myself. My brother Bob was probably too young prior to Charles Milton's death to feel his full impact. Charles Milton was an average size for his time approximately 5 foot 8 or 9 inches and even when I knew him in his mid-to late fifties and early sixties, he was still wiry, strong, energetic and physically active.

"In the family he was known as Garry. This was probably a mature vocalization of my attempt to say grandpa at a young age. Garry had a strong out going good humored personality. He and the young Bill Haines had the likable approach to others that I weakly tried to emulate.

"As a young man he worked in the shoe business in Lynn, as Linda has documented.

"He met his bride to be, Georgianna, at a social club either run or sponsored by the company for whom they worked. Mentioning Georgianna leads me to the first of what might become too many asides. I feel I know; Janice, Mike, Nancie, and Linda and I see them as distinct individual human beings. Yet I also see many common characteristics, mannerisms and interactions. Things I could easily relate to in remembering my brother, parents or Hall grandparents.

"There is one major key difference and that is the accepted cultural norms of our various generations. That makes a big difference in how we look at and interpret data as it comes to us. The quick example which comes to mind is the "short pregnancy" of Georgianna. Today that is practically a nonevent. I will bet that it was a huge deal to Georgianna and C. M.. It was also probably very important to my father and mother. Neither mentioned it to me during their respective lifetimes.

"As a second point, we have created an error writing about Georgianna, and I confess I may have contributed to the error by joking with Linda. There is absolutely no data or conversation that I know about to support the theory that Georgianna was possibly an illegitimate offspring of Singer. The connections in family folklore were strictly work-related and stated that a Clough relative of Georgianna invented the Singer sewing machine bobbin. We now know that this is not true, but that a Clough did contribute modifications of the bobbin mentioned in patents.

"The family opinion of Georgianna is skewed in this time frame because of her long term feud with my mother. I remember her as a strongly opinionated but mostly decent person who did not age gracefully but was devoted to her son and along with Charles Milton made very substantial contributions to our family in general and me in particular.

"C.M. was a member of the National Guard although I do not believe he served on active duty. He was also a Mason and the last I knew David Hall had his Masonic sword. I don't remember either he or my grandmother being Church oriented. I don't remember having any conversations with him about his mother or father.

"On the corner or slightly off the corner of Charles Street in Malden is a building which I believe is now a restaurant. In my day it was a bowling alley. In my grandfather's day it was a social hall. My mother told me that from time to time a professional wrestler would appear and challenge the locals. If they could beat him they would win $10. Apparently my grandfather took up the challenge and won. On other occasions the Salvation Army band would give concerts either in or out side the social hall.

"As an aside, years ago I had a large cat who for his safety was never let out to roam and was raised as an inside cat. When I was home however, he would drape himself across my shoulders and I would take him for walks along the beach here at the Cape. My mother told me upon seeing this that my grandfather had a cat which would ride on his shoulders from the animal hospital down to Charles Street to listen to the Salvation Army band. I'm speculating a little bit from here on in but not too much.

"I believe that Abby Hall or Hough to use her married name was a strong influence and benefactor to Charles Milton Hall. It would be interesting to see her will since I suspect she outlived her husband and left significant money to Charles Milton Hall. I know that C. M. was active in helping her with chores et al when he was an adult. I know the furniture in Georgianna's formal living room came from the Hough family. Currently I am using the dining room set in my house. Unfortunately, there was substantial water damage to parts of the set while stored in Linden and I had to refinish prior to using. Also I have a note from C. M. to Abby which is a formula for home brew used during Prohibition. This is in my safety deposit box. I also have a book given by Abby to Charles Milton at Christmas when he was a boy of eight which she signed and dated 1889. The name of the book amusingly enough if I ever write about Bob and I is " John Hall or the school days of an American boy". I believe that Abby was a significant contributor to the economic improvement of the Charles Milton generation family which at least carried down to Bob, myself and some of you.

"Either through inheritance and/or from his own work, Garry was able to move from the environment of a skilled blue-collar worker to his own small business which was raising Boston terriers. Rocky Dale Chum who was a champion and bred from Garry stock was bigger than life in the family and often talked about when I was a child. Chum became an important part of the family folklore. I remember more than one photo of him being displayed at the Linden house. My sense is that in addition to being a breeder of dogs, he performed as a veterinarian without portfolio. Who knows maybe in his day a degree was not a requirement. He supplied the down payment and was an active participant in my fathers hospital probably as a technical partner more than an employee. We used to make some of Garrys formulas in the hospital and after bottling sell to other vets as well as clients. I remember his mange formula was loaded with sulfur and really smelled gross.

"I remember him as an adventuresome guy who was my friend."
