    Notes:

The son of Thomas F. Hall and Elizabeth "Betsey" Hall of Atkinson, Maine (probably a cousin to Thomas), James Robert Hall was a Civil War veteran - 3rd Maine Light Artillery, Jan-Mar 1862 - and -1st Maine Calvary, 1863-1865 - who married Dorcas Jenks, also of Maine, in 1858.

James was survived by six children: George Washington Hall, Charles Henry Hall, Ernest Hall, Fred James Hall, Lena May Hall Evans and Clara Hall Fellows. Another son, Edgar, who died as an infant. (Edgar is buried in the same plot a Thomas F. Hall and Betsey Hall.)

James took up farming following his discharge. During the mid-late 1860s, he and his family lived in Enfield, Maine, but by 1869, James and Dorcas had purchased a farm in Atkinson where they continued to live for roughly thirty years.

"Go west, young man," an often heard phrase of the time, clearly resonated with the Halls, as by the turn of the century all of the children, with the exception of George, had moved to California. Not wanting to be separated from so many of her children, Dorcas persuaded James at the age of 70 to sell their home and follow the children westward. Most, including James and Dorcas, ultimately settled in Alameda or Sonoma Counties.

His brief obituary notes that James was an esteemed citizen of Petaluma; a retired rancher who passed away at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Clara and Fred Fellows, and who had until late been "remarkedly well preserved, strong, and rugged."

He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California, near the grave of his late wife, Dorcas.

    Notes:

Bernice Effie Hall was born to George Washington Hall and Effie Sweet, of Atkinson Maine. The eldest of eight children (one died in infancy), Bernice was a scholar and graduated at the top of her high school class. Given the family's limited finances, however, only the boys were encouraged to attend college, an attitude that was typical of the time. Nonetheless, Bernice never lost her love of learning and desire to obtain a formal education, and at age 76 became the (then) oldest person ever to graduate from San Diego State College with a Bachelor's degree.

Bernice worked to help support her family, retiring finally after many years at the U.S. Naval Air Station at North Island. Sharing with her husband, Robert, a high regard for the importance of education, she lived to see her son, Robert Jr., graduate from Yale University under an ROTC scholarship and her grandson, Robert Charles, graduate from college, as she herself eventually did. The early loss to a plane crash of her beloved brother, Linwood, a pioneering aviator and young man of very great promise, deeply grieved Bernice, and to the end of her life she held her family as close as she possibly could.

Bernice's mother Effie, who was raised by John Calvin and Mary Sweet, was actually born to Ella Baxter, daughter of John Baxter and Sally Jane Bragdon. Ella died very young and Effie was cared for initially by Ella's sister, Hattie Baxter, a nurse by vocation. Hattie later brought her to the Sweets, paying for young Effie's room and board. Eventually Effie took the Sweet name but later discarded it for the name of her biological mother, Baxter.

"Uncle Clif was the brother of my paternal grandmother. One of eight children born to George Washington Hall and Effie Sweet, Clifton was a successful businessman and retired executive of F.W. Woolworth Co. Like his father, George, Clifton was involved professionally in real estate. Uncle Clif kept a cottage on Cape Cod where my family enjoyed a wonderful summer vacation one year. During my teens, Uncle Clif gave me some stern advice about how to approach adulthood--advice which served me well throughout life. Clifton was survived by his wife, Anne Dempsey, his sons, Clifton Jr., Donald and Alan and his daughter Ann."
