    An Early Pioneer

    At one time he was a Teller at a Bank in Middlebury, VT. About 2 years after their marriage they went to Georgia, where Eliza's brother Hervey Hall was a prominent business man at Columbus. While there Samuel was engaged in the tin and hardware business. After a stay of 4-5 years they returned to Vermont. There he was appointed an agent of the Union Colony, organized in 1835-6 to locate in the Territory of Michigan. In the winter of 1837, with his wife and 6 children, he moved to Vermontville, 3 more children were born there, all of his children reached mature life. Their first born child died in Georgia.
