    Joseph Carpenter was editor and owner of the first paper of Cincinnati, "The Western Spy," the initial number of which was issued May 28, 1799.  The paper was one of the most famous of the old newspapers of cincinnati.  Captain Carpenter led
    out a company in the War of 1812 and served faithfully, dying from exposure endured during a forced march from Fort St. Mary's in mid-winter.

    From a record of his service, the following is taken:  "Captain Carpenter commmanded his company with high reputation as an officer, and rendered essential service to his country."
