Eliza was the daughter of Joseph Harding, Jr., of Baldwin, Cumberland County, Maine and Harriet H. Cressey Harding of Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.

Eliza married Jeremiah B. Yates on 01 February 1859. They had three children. Sarah Yates; Hattie Yates; and Arthur Yates. Arthur grew up to marry Annie Harmon. All the children were born in Baldwin, Cumberland County, Maine.
