    ********************************
Fall River Daily Evening News, May 17, 1880:

Deacon Benjamin Burt, formerly of Assonet, died at Newton Highlands, on Monday, May 10th, of pneumonia, aged 90 years, 11 months and 24 days. Deacon Burt was for most of his life a resident of Freetown, where he was engaged in the dry goods and grocery business, and for half a century, or more, was deacon of the Congregational church in that town. He was actively interested in the religious movements of the day; was one of the pioneers in the anti-slavery and temperance cause, and on these subjects was always noted for his outspoken and fearless utterances, which made him many opponents.

In consequence of the loss of his wife, and declining health, he went to reside with a married daughter, at Newton, some eight years ago, where he remained until the time of his death. His remains were brought to Freetown for interment, and his funeral services took place at the Congregational church, in that town, on Thursday last.
