Joseph was the son of Enoch and Alice Lewis.
Joseph J Lewis, Esq., died on Thursday evening at his residence, at West Chester. He was born October 5, 1801, at West Town, where his father was a teacher. He studied law in New York under Chancellor Kent, and was admitted in Chester in 1825. He practised his profession steadily till 1878, and taking an active part in politics as a Whig and Republican, was appointed Commissioner of Internal Revenue in 1863. Resigning in 1865, he became the law partner of Hon. S. S. Cox in New York, and from 1869 to 1872 practised law in this city. He suffered from a complication of diseases and for two years had been confined to his house.
