    Dr. John Phillips, aged 80 years, died at Stevens Point. He was one of the pioneers of Central Wisconsin and was the first of his profession to locate at Stevens Point. He was born at Richmond, Vermont, Nov. 4, 1823. He removed to Wisconsin in 1846 and to Stevens Point in 1848, Where he resided and practiced until death. In 1854 he was married to Miss Ellen E. Hall, a lovely and cultured woman of marked literary attainments. He was the first and chief promoter to organize the republican party in Portage county. He served as a councilman, member of the board of supervisors, and member of the board of education. In 1860 and again in 1864 he was elected assemblyman, and in 1895 he was elected state senator for Portage, Waupaca and Waushara counties.

    Dr. Phillips left two daughters. He was predeceased by his wife and three sons. His son, Carl, a physician, died about eight years ago.

Ellen (daughter of Reverend Samuel Read Hall, Jr. and Mary Dascomb) was born on 14 Oct 1832 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts; was christened on 13 Jan 1833 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts; died on 24 Aug 1877 in Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin; was buried after 24 Aug 1877 in Forest Cemetery, Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin.
