    Cheryl Hall, Sept. 2017:

According to birth records, Abigail was born on 22 May 1708 in Wrentham, Norfolk, Massachusetts to Josiah Whitney and his wife, Mary.

Mary's surname has not been discovered, but there are a couple of spotty marriage records for Josiah Whitney and Mary. One record not giving a marriage date but a date of 1666 for her birth; the other giving a marriage date of 1686. It was after Mary died (and I believe I've found what could be her death record) that Josiah married second to Abigail Marten, so I think it is correct that Mary is Abigail's mother, not Abigail Marten.

If the death record is her's, Mary Whitney died in Wrentham on 18 July 1710. Josiah married Abigail Marten on 3 Nov 1713 in Wrentham, so that would have been too late for Abigail Marten to have been Abigail Whitney's mother.

Unfortunately, a death date for Abigail (Whitney) Hall has not been found nor the burial location for her and Preserved. I presume that they are both buried in Hallowell, Maine.

Josiah Hall was born in Wrentham May 16, 1743.  He married Amiable (Anna) Allen who was born December 14, 1741. Josiah and Amiable removed to Winthrop, Maine and settled on Lot #11 in Winthrop. He came to Winthrop from Wrentham before the incorporation of the town.

"HALL, JOSIAH, Winthrop, Private, Capt. Oliver Colborn's Company of Minute Men, Col. Arnolds regiment.  Enlisted July 25, 1775; service 20 days."  (From Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War", Vol 7, page 96.)

He was prominent in town affairs while in Winthrop. He was the Town Clerk from 1771 to 1778 and then became a Town Selectman in 1778 ("History of Winthrop" by Everett S. Stockpole).

The Decleration of Independence were spread upon the Town's records 'in his full, round and legible hand.'  He was one of the members of the Committee of Correspondent, Inspection and Safety in 1778  (From "History of Winthrop" by Everett S. Stockpole.)

About 1782, they removed to Washington Plantation, now Mt. Vernon.
    _________

    From Cheryl Hall, March 2019:

Josiah and Amiable (Allen) Hall's first child was Betsey Hall, born 11 Aug 1763 in Massachusetts (probably Wrentham but I cannot find a record) and yes, I know, that is prior to the parents marriage.

Betsey married 1788 in Readfield, Kennebec, Maine, to John Shed(d), b. 10 Aug 1762, Tewksbury, Middlesex, MA, d. 29 Sep 1842 in Vienna, Kennebec, Maine. Betsey died 6 Jul 1849 in Vienna, Kennebec, Maine.

Josiah Hall does not appear in the US Census after 1800, so likely he died BEF. 1810. No records for his death have been found.

From History of Peru, p. 154

"Following the death of the parents [Liberty & Lydia], several of the boys had homes with the farmers in Peru. Liberty lived with George Walker a term of years, Jeremiah lived with Adam Knight and grew up to be worthy, influential men. They were of stalwart frame and were active and progressive for that period with limited advantages. Three of them, Jeremiah, Jefferson, and Robert in Peru were identified as prominent pillars in erecting and maintaining the Methodist Church there many years. Jeremiah established the first ferry below Dixfield village one half mile, in 1828-9, last known as Brown's Ferry."

    From Cheryl Hall, Mar 2019:

Death date of Bef. 12 Aug 1799 seems correct, as that is the date that Levina Hall, widow was ordered to appear to be named administrator of his estate. Joseph Fifield, along with two others were appointed on 28 August 1799.

Nathan Hall is called, "late of Belgrade".

There were two minor children over the age of 14 who selected Joseph Fifield to be their guardian: Cynthia and Nathan (this will change birth year of Nathan as well as marriage year of Nathan and Lovina.

    Notes:

Allen and Maria Hall may have had two other children, Ester, a daughter, who died at the age of one and Abby, a daughter, who died at the age of eleven.  (This suggestion comes from the recollection of Ella Hall.)

Allen Hall removed to Winthrop, ME with his parents sometime before 1771.  While there he married Maria Lyons.  They removed to East Dixfield Village, Town of Wilton, where he was one of the earliest settlers in that area.  He built a log cabin
on a hill overlooking the center of the village.  The census of 1790 lists Josiah and sons Nathan and Allen in Washington Town (now Mt. Vernon).  The 1810 census has Allen in Wilton.  He and his wife are buried  in the East Dixfield Cemetary.

The following is as it was told by Ella Hall who, at the time, was widow of Albion, son of Anson and grandson of Allen Hall.  Its authenticity is subject to considerable doubt:

Allen Hall, who was born at Walpole, MA, was one of the first settlers of Winthrop, ME.  He was a Saxon by birth.  His wife, Maria Lyons, whom he married in April 1780 was born in Massachusetts and had moved to Readfield, ME before they were
married.  Allen Hall was a Baptist Preacher.  He went to war for one year during the Revolution.  He was taken prisoner and lay a prisoner in Quebec Prison for six months until peace was declared.  While he was a prisoner his captors told him
that if he would swim the Shatigee River they would give him quarter.  When he got across the reiver they helped him out of the water, gave him som brandy, and took him prisoner again.

One reason for doubting the above legend is that Allen Hall was born in 1767 and consequently was only fifteen years old when the war ended in 1782.

Ella Hall says that Allen Hall moved to Wilton before his son William was born.

    From Cheryl Hall, March 2019:

Esther Hall married James Allen in Readfield, Kennebec County, Maine on 20 Dec 1797.

Logical proof that this is the correct Esther Hall: Esther had an older sister, Nabby, who married Deacon Church Brainard. In 1811, Esther and James Allen named a son, Church Brainard Allen.
