Note: No burial record has been found for John, but he lived his entire adult life in Newton, and died there, so is almost certainly buried in the East Parish Burying Ground in Newton where two of his sons have extant gravestones.

John was the son of George and Mary Woodward of Watertown, Mass., and born there 20 March 1648/9. He m. (1) c. 1673 Rebecca ROBBINS, b. c. 1653, d. Newton 8 Jan 1695/6 (VR), the daughter of Richard and Rebecca Robbins. An article on the Bancroft family in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (94:218) says John m. (2) Cambridge, Mass. 16 March 1698/9 Sarah Prentice (Torrey).

John lived with his family in Newton, Mass. where he was a highway surveyor in 1686, constable in 1694, and selectman in 1701 and 1712. His will, dated 26 Feb 1727/8, was proved in 1732, naming all of his surviving sons: John, Richard, Ebenezer (executor), Daniel and Jonathan, and naming daughters Rebecca Hunting and Abigail Greenwood. Children:

* John (twin), b. Newton 18 July 1675 (VR), may be the Deacon John Woodward who d. Canterbury, CT 1 April 1767. He m. Newton 11 April 1698 (VR) Hannah HYDE, b. Cambridge, Mass. 1 Feb 1676 [/7?], d. Canterbury, CT 13 Dec 1731, the daughter of Jonathan Hyde, Jr. and Dorothy Kidder. They had five children, born 1699 to 1713. Hannah has an extant grave marker in the South Cemetery, Brooklyn, Windham Co., CT.

* Richard, b. Newton 26 Sep 1677 (VR), d. living in 1739, m. Mary _______. On 8 Nov 1708 be bought land in Canterbury, CT, and moved there. They had two children born in Newton 1702 and 1705, then five more born in Canterbury from 1708 to 1725. His will was dated 1739, with son Noah as executor.

Newton 14 Feb 1749/50, aged 71, the daughter of Robert Grundy and Mary Parker of Roxbury. They had five children born 1704 to 1714. Daniel and Elizabeth both have extant grave markers in the East Parish Burying Ground in Newton.

* Rebecca, b. Newton 2 Feb 1682/3 (VR gives year as 1683), d. Needham, Mass. 27 May 1746, m. Watertown 11 April 1709 (Newton VR) Stephen HUNTING, b. Dedham, Mass. 14 May 1688, d. Needham, Mass. 28 March 1740, the son of John Hunting and Elizabeth Paine. Rebecca and Stephen lived in Needham, Mass. from early in their marriage, as the births of all five of their children are recorded there from 1713 to 1722/3. Rebecca and Stephen have FAG memorials in the Old Village Cemetery in Dedham, but there is no record of their burial there, and they are far more likely buried in the Needham Cemetery in the town where they died, and where other members of the Hunting family have extant gravestones.

(2) Newton 8 June 1720 (VR) Thankful MIRICK, b. Newton 24 April 1685, d. Newton 21 Feb 1743/4, the daughter of John Mirick and Elizabeth Trowbridge. Jonathan had three children with first wife born 1713 to 1718, and two more with his second wife, born 1721 and 1726.

* Joseph, b. Newton 26 Nov 1688 (VR), d. Windham, CT 30 May 1727 (VR), m. Canterbury, CT 24 June 1714 Elizabeth SILSBY, b. Lynn, Mass. 2 Aug 1685, d. Windham, CT 22 May 1727 (VR), the daughter of Jonathan Silsby and Bethia Marsh of Lynn and Canterbury. Joseph moved from Newton with his brothers John and Richard, and bought land in Canterbury, CT in 1710, living near the line between Canterbury and Windham. No children have been found.

* Ebenezer, b. Newton 12 March 1690/1 (VR), m. Mindwell STONE

* Abigail, b. Newton 25 May 1695 (VR), d. Sherborn, Mass. 19 Sep 1775, m. Newton 21 June 1715 (VR) William GREENWOOD, b. Newton 14 Oct 1689, d. Sherborn, Mass. 14 Nov 1756, the son of Thomas and Abigail Greenwood. They settled in Sherborn, Mass. soon after their marriage, where William was a tythingman in 1717, a selectman for 6 years and town clerk for 24 years. He was also a representative to the Mass. General Court in 1747. Abigail and William had ten children born from 1716 to 1737. William has a FAG memorial in the Sherborn Center Cemetery, but it is not certain that he has an extant gravestone.

John was a twin, and the son of John Woodward and Rebecca Robbins of Newton, Mass. He m. Newton 11 April 1698 (VR) Hannah HYDE, b. Cambridge, Mass. 1 Feb 1676 [/7?], d. John and Hannah Hyde Woodward lived at Newton for a few years until they migrated to Canterbury, CT. in 1710.

John resided in Newton for a few years before removing to Canterbury in 1710.

In Feb 1702, John and Hannah Woodward witnessed a deed whereby Jonathon Hyde gave land for the use and benefit of the school in the southerly part of the town of Newtown. John Woodward and Jonathon Hyde sold a house and 120 acres in Newton in 1703 for 90 pounds to Robert Murdock of Roxbury.

Canterbury was incorporated as a town in Oct 1703.

By 1705 John Woodward was a resident of Plainfield/Canterbury, CT and by 1706 had settled south of Allen and North of Canterbury line. The church of Canterbury was constituted 13 Jun 1711 at which time John Woodward was covenant and was recognized as one of the "seven Pillars" or constituent members of the church.

In Oct 1714 the tract of land between Plainfield and Canterbury was annexed with John Woodward being added to the inhabitants of Canterbury.

In 1714 The lands of Richard Adams, John Woodward, Edward Spalding and Daniel Cady were added to Canterbury from Plainfield.

At the first reported town meeting 10 Dec 1717, (ten years after formation) John Woodward was chosen moderator and was elected as one of the two grand-jurors.

John Woodward was elected first deacon of the first church of Brooklyn, Connecticut, in the second quarter of the 18th century, and was chosen moderator of the town meeting in Canterbury, on 10 Dec 1717 and John Woodward and Solomon Terry were elected grand jurors.

In May 1721 he signed a petition to have own church between Pomfret and Canterbury, and in Oct 1728, he signed a petition for a new town.

John Woodward the first of that name to come to Windham Co., CT bought a rectangle of land in Canterbury covering 187 acres .  On this property he built a house. The greater part of this property remained in the family until 1880.

12 Mar 1722/3 Richard Adams of Norwich sold John Woodward of Canterbury a tract of 3,000 acres of land.

11 May 1723 John Woodward gave his son, John, 50 acres and 50 acres to his son-in-law, Henry Bacon of Pomfret.

15 Apr 1743 John signed his will in which he named Abigail as his wife. It was proved 5 May 1767. It stated that marriage contract with his wife was to be fulfilled, mentions 3 sons: John, Ephraim and Deliverance. Daughters: Mary Cleveland and 4 children of daughter, Hannah Bacon, deceased: Hannah Hyde, Henry, Benjamin and Ephraim Bacon.

Ebenezer was the son of John Woodward and Rebecca Robbins of Newton, Mass., and married in Newton 25 Jan 1716 Mindwell STONE, the daughter of Ebenezer Stone and Margaret Trowbridge of Newton. Children, all births recorded in Newton:

* Mindwell, b. 1717, d. 1794, m. (1) Nathaniel SHEPARD; m. (2) Jeremiah EVERETT. She is buried in the Old Main Street Cemetery in New London, NH.

* Samuel, b. 1 Feb 1726/7, d. Weston, Mass. 5 Oct 1782, m. Weston 11 Jan 1753 Abigail WILLIAMS. Samuel and Abigail both have grave markers in the Farmers Burial Ground in Weston.

* Mary, b. 28 Feb 1732/3, d. Schuyler, Herkimer Co., NY 31 Dec 1823, m. Newton 31 Oct 1751 Jonathan RICHARDSON. Mary is buried in the Indian Opening Cemetery in Madison, NY, where she likely went to live with one of her children.

Mary was the youngest of five known children born to Ebenezer Woodward and Mindwell Stone of Newton, Mass. She was married in Newton 31 Oct 1751 to Jonathan RICHARDSON, b. Newton 1 July 1727, d. Cheshire, Berkshire Co., Mass. 28 Feb 1794, son of David Richardson and Remember Ward.

Several accounts credit Jonathan with Revolutionary War service, and this may well be true. A Jonathan Richardson served in Capt Samuel Low's company, Col Benjamin Simond's (Berkshire Co.) regiment from 9 July to 14 Aug 1777, with 36 days' service at St. Croix. He served again as a Sergeant in the same company in Sep 1777, and again as a private in the same company in Sep and Oct 1780.

Mary and Jonathan had 13 children, born 1752 to 1777, of whom the first seven or eight were born in Newton, and the remainder were born elsewhere, probably mostly in Cheshire, Mass. The death date for Jonathan comes from an online account and could not be confirmed. Mary is buried in the Indian Opening Cemetery in Madison, NY, where she may have gone to live with one of her children.
