David Wellington Seiter, age 87, passed away peacefully at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, with family at his bedside. David was born the son of David and Alma (Irish) Seiter on May 18, 1929, in Pontiac, Michigan.
He proudly served his country in the US Army where he was stationed in Korea and Germany. Dave was an active member of the Clare-Farwell American Legion Post #558, often seen playing "Taps" at services for his fallen comrades. He was a past member of the John Q. Look Masonic Lodge #404 in Clare and was a member of the Clare United Methodist Church.
David served on the Clare Police Department, had owned and operated Star Cab Company, Seiter's Marathon, and started Clare Automotive Parts Exchange, and later D. Wellington Craftworks. On his 44th birthday he graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Northwood Institute in Automotive Parts Management.
David was united in marriage to Virginia Cole-Walthew on May 28, 1994. After retirement, he dedicated 12 years caring for his parents. Dave thoroughly enjoyed woodworking, stock car racing, leather tooling, coin collecting, drawing on napkins to illustrate his point, and reciting the "potato bug" story that he had learned from his grandfather, to his grandchildren.
David is survived by his wife of twenty-two years, Virginia, of Harrison; his children, David R. (Carol) Seiter of Plainwell; Connie Lee Berg of DeWitt; Kevin (Debbie) Seiter of Madison Heights; six grandchildren, David M. (Wendy) Seiter of Indianapolis, ?In.; Lori (Todd) DeHoff of Wellington, Co; Jennifer (Craig) Byer of Gig Harbor, Wa.; Jill (Sean) Baugh of Tacoma, Wa.; Hannah and Zach Seiter of Madison Hgts., Mi.; seven great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Alma Lee Owens of Midland; Connie Jane Garthe of Traverse City; Madeline (Tom) Brockway of DeWitt, several nieces and nephews, his friend and comrade Clayton Pomranky, and many, many friends at Witbeck's Grocery in Clare. David was predeceased by his parents, David and Alma.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 1:00 PM at the Clare United Methodist Church followed by military honors rendered by the Clare-Farwell American Legion Post #558 at the Cherry Grove Cemetery.
