    From FindaGrave:

Nobel Prize Laureate Scientist, Inventor. Working on his doctoral thesis in physics in 1879, he discovered that a magnetic field would skew equipotential lines in a current-carrying conductor. His development of a transverse electric field in a solid material such as wire carries an electric current and is placed in a magnetic field to the current. This principle was patented and became known as the "Hall effect" a discovery comparable to the greatest ever for how little was known about electricity at the time. Full details of his phenomenon invention was published in the American Journal of Science and in the Philosophical Magazine in 1880. He joined Harvard University, Massachusetts in 1895 and was appointed professor of physics, a post he held until his retirement in 1921. He continued his thermoelectric research at Harvard, where he also wrote numerous physics textbooks and laboratory manuals for world wide distribution. The Hall effect, is the primary circuit of an electronic ignition system used in magnetic field sensors, now made in millions and is the official standard for electrical resistance. More than a century after its discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1985.

    Notes:

    From Findagrave:

Father is Joshua E. Hall, mother is Lucy A HILBORN Hall. On birth records of the children, his wife is listed as Maude A Noyes, who was born in Washington, DC.

He starts showing up on the CA Great Registers in 1892, and each time he registers, it's at the address of 1409 Grove, Alameda, CA (the registration office).

On the 1900 census in Oakland, CA, he is listed as living with his two children, Myra (10, b 4/2/1890 in Alameda (city), CA) and Herbert, 7, b 11/5/1893 in Washington, DC). It lists Frederick as widowed, with two children born to him and two still living. It lists his parents as both also being born in Maine, he's working as a lawyer, and that his wife was born in District of Columbia.

On the 1910 census in SF, he is listed as a lodger with his two kids, Myra N and Herbert E, but the kids are listed as "currently traveling in Europe". He is still listed as a lawyer.

By the 1920 census in Piedmont, Alameda County, CA, he is still working as a lawyer and he is living with his son, Herbert E (26); his wife, Susan G (25); and their daughter, Myra M (age 14 months).

On the 1940 census in SF, he is mistakenly written down as Frederick WINSTON Hall. He is listed as a "guest" with 17 others at the Bohemian Club.
