    Obituary

    Charles Augustus Flint
(The Passing of an Old Resident)

The "Over the Mountain" community received a shock when on Thursday, April 23, word passed from friend to friend that Charles Augustus Flint had passed away that morning, after an illness of only a few hours.

Born December 20, 1847, in the house built by his grandfather Jabez Flint in 1814, he was the only child of Augustus and Julia Lord Flint.

His half-brother, George Flint, died as a young man, of fever contracted in the Civil war. His half-sister, Martha Bockee Flint was the fond, congenial companion of his childhood and, whenever her vacations permitted a welcome guest at the "Homeplace On the Hill" until her death in 1900.

His education was obtained at Fort Academy for Boys and at Amenia Seminary after leaving the district school at "The City" (Smithfield) where his grandson how attends.

On October 6,1880, he married Matilda Pamela Hall of Charlton, Saratoga Co., N. Y. Her uncle, Rev. A. H. Seeley, pastor of Smithfield church for twenty-two years, performed the ceremony.

Four children, Gilbert A., Julia M., Charles H., and Dorothy L., were born to them, all of these and grandchildren survive. Mrs. Flint died August 24, 1902.

Of a studious, modest nature Mr. Flint never sought public office, but colleagues, recognizing in him the traits of Christian uprightness, truth and honor, called him to the duties of school trustee, director of the Amenia Bank, trustee of Smithfield church, of which he was a consistent member for many years, and of which he was elected an elder in 1892. He was continued in this office until death.

Mr. Flint's nature partook of the strength of the hills he loved and he set a fine example of the sturdy intelligent, peace-loving farmer whose home was his castle. Even in youth showed his love of nature by bringing from a distant wood the maples that line the road north of that home. They stand a beautiful monument to a beautiful life.

The sympathy of his many friends goes out to the bereaved family.

Charles A. Flint, 83, died at his home on Flint Hill here. He was born in Amenia and lived most of his life on Flint Hill, which he owned. He was an elder of the Smithfield Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Amenia Grange. He is survived by two sons, Gilbert and Charles A.; and two daughters, Julia and Dorothy, all of Amenia. Funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Arther James officiating. Burial was in Smithfield Cemetery.
