    U.S. Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Member. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and practiced law in Buffalo, New York. Entering politics, he held several various offices in Erie County (1831-37), such as deputy county clerk, clerk of the board of supervisors and Buffalo City Attorney. He also was chancery master, in 1839, Judge of Erie County, (1841-45) and a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1846. In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed the 14th Postmaster General in the Cabinet of President Fillmore, serving (1850-52). After leaving the Cabinet, he was appointed United States district judge for the western district of New York, in 1852, serving until his death at age 63.
