Notes:

John was a soldier in King Phillip's war and was in the swamp fight in 1675.  He was in the Narragansett expedition in 1689 and was advanced 16 pounds to sustain the war.

The following information was provided by Kathleen (Shaw) Mackell in her Genealogical History dated 1984:

"John Hall, the oldest son of Edward and Esther Hall, was born in Braintree in 1651.  He was only nineteen when his father died and he probably stayed with his mother to help with the farm.  When King Philip's War broke out in 1675, he was one of thirteen men drafted from Rehoboth.  For some reason, his name was omitted in Bodge's History of King Philip's War but in Old Rehoboth records (Rehoboth Rate Book II), he is listed as receiving 2 pounds, 18 shillings, and 8 pence and serving 39 days in 1675.  He later advanced money to carry on the war.  After the war was over, he returned to the farm, married Mary Newell in 1684, and was listed as a proprietor and inhabitant in Rehoboth in 1689.  John Hall had land given to him by his father, Edward, which was evidently in the original Rehoboth North Purchase.  It was fifty acres along both sides of the Ten Mile River and in a place called the Falls.  He sold it to Samuel Penfield and John Stevenson and they later sold it to Thomas Daggett."

The Plymouth Colony Records show that John Hall was born 23 Nov 1650 at Braintree, MA versus 28 Jan 1651 as recorded in the book "Halls of New England" by Rev. David B. Hall 1883.  The date of 28 Jan 1651 could be a baptismal date.

In the name of God Amen, I Samuel Hall of Tauton in the County of Bristoll in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, being of sound memory through the mercy of God, capable to dispose of my worldly estate, though at this time labouring under some bodily illness, do make this to be my last will and testament: In primis I comit my soul into ye hands of Christ and desire my body may be decently buryed by my Executors hereafter named, and after funeral expenses and just debts are payed my will is as followeth:

First the lands which I have already ___? on my eldest son Jonathan Hall by Deed, I do hereby confirme the same unto him and his heyrs and assigns forever.

Secondly, what money, moveables, bedding, cow hath been received already by my daughter Esther Blake shall be all that she shall have of my Estate as long as her mother lives, only that one cow now at sd Blakes house which he took of me to the halves, shall not be taken from my daughter if I dy, ___? I give it to her.

Thirdly, whereas I have an whole purchase right to undivided lands in Tauton and one third part of a purchase right to undivided lands in Tauton, I give my sd purchase rights to my two sons Jonathan Hall and Samuel Hall, to be equally between them, to them and to theyr heyrs and assigns forever, to be theyrs immediately after my decease.

Fourthly, to my beloved wife Abigail Hall I give my dwelling house and homested and all the rest of my lands ___? estate during the time of her natural life if she continue my widow so long or otherwise during her widowhood and bearing my name (excepting all ways that I ___? for her use and improvement in case she should marry again, the north end of my dwelling house and the land on the north side of ye road between my dwelling house and my son Jonathan's land) but after my wives decease or marriage my lands shall pass to my sons in manner as followeth,

To my youngest son Samuel Hall, I give the house I now dwell in in Tauton and my homelands to have and to hold the same to sd Samuel Hall his heyrs and assigns forever; the bounds between him and his brother Jonathan Halls land shall be that place which we call the cross (crop?)fence namely that cross (crop?)fence which my son Jonathan ___? ___? of a part of. My land at Kehtehtiqut* [see note below], namely the Neck and the Little Lott (so called) I give to my two sons Jonathan and Samuel to be equally divided between them; And I order my sd two sons that at ye end of four years after sd ____? lands comes into ye possession (namely after my wives decease) is to pay each of them the sum of ten pounds to theyr two sisters Esther Blake and Hannah Hall which sd sum of twenty pounds is to be equally divided between sd Esther and Hannah.

Fifthly, as to my stock of living Creatures(?) and money (if I leave any) and moveables, I give them all to my beloved wife, to her disposal(?) and for her comfort; Excepting one yoak of steers I give to my son Samuel Hall and to the girl who lives with me called Elizabeth Prat I give one cow if she live to be seventeen years of age, with liberty to my wife to give her more if she feels cause; also it is my will that my younger daughter Hannah Hall shall have thirty pounds payd her out of my moveables when she arrives to be eighteen years of age; also my wife hath liberty to bestow(?) more on any of her children if she can spare it and see cause and what is left of my sd stock or moveables unspent and not disposed of by my wife shall after my wives decease go to and among all my children, only one shall have power to appoint how much or what part each of my children take thereof.

[Editors Note: Samuel Hall's son, Samuel, died Intestate about 1736-37. A record of the payment of his debts was entered November 18, 1741 in the Tenth Book of Wills, 108:109. One entry is extremely important in helping to identify Samuel Sr.'s two daughters, Esther and Hannah:

"To said Blake [Samuel] and wife and to Barnabas Crossman and wife of Middleborough (by ye last will of said deceased's father, a Legacy '96 one of them from the share of the deceased. Paid Ten Pounds."

In addition, the division of the lands of Samuel Hall, son of Samuel who died intestate about 1736/37 might hold clues as to the location of the homestead. Mercy, wife of Samuel was given the home and 2 acres of land…beginning at the old forge pond; from said pond by land of Judas Chase and mentions as a bound, the highway that leads through Raynham to Bridgewater.

*"Tetiquet or Titicut, which passes for the Indian name of Taunton, and of a fishing place on Taunton River in the north-west part of Middleborough, Mass., shows how effectually such names may be disguised by phonetic corruption and mutilation. Kehte-tuk-ut (or as Eliot wrote it in Genesis xv. 18, Kehteihtukqut) means 'on the great river.' In the Plymouth Colony Records we find the forms 'Cauteeticutt' and 'Coteticutt,' and elsewhere, Kehtehticut,'97the latter, in 1698, as the name of a place on the great river, "between Taunton and Bridgewater." Hence, 'Teghtacutt,' 'Teightaquid,' 'Tetiquet,' &c."

Andrew and his first wife, Susanna Capen,  lived in Rehoboth, MA,  County of Bristol, from 1665 to 1691; then they removed to the town of Newton, MA, County of Middlesex, to a residence on Oak Hill from 1691 to 1756.  After the death of his first wife on 18 Aug 1736, he married Mary Bennett on 12 Oct 1737.  All of Andrew's children were born in Newton, MA.

According to the book "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs, Worcester County, Volume 2," the Coat of Arms in the possession of this family is like that of the Medford Halls, and it is very likely that may of the immigrant Halls were brothers or near relatives.

He gave his property to his widow Rebecca, to John, son of his brother John, and to Ephriam, son of his brother Ephraim (Bristol County Probate Records, 1760-1762, Page 323).  His will being dated 25 Jun 1759.   Based on this, it would appear that Edward and Rebecca had no children.

The following is taken directly from a book entitled John Adams and the America Revolution, A Decision Arrived At, by Catherine Drinker Bowen 1951, pages 299 - 300. The paragraphs concern a conversation that took place between Abigail and John Adams. It states:

"Your mother had a new dress," she said, "of peach-colored taffeta. And a peach-colored bonnet, trimmed with white satin ribbons. Have you not noted it?  Mr. John Hall, last night, admired the costume excessively when he was here. Ladies" - Abby paused, finished with a touch of ribaldry highly surprising - "ladies do not wear satin ribbons to catch flies with." 

John stared, then leaped from his chair. "In God's name!" he said. "Not Mr. Hall?  Not my mother and old John Hall . . . Abby!"  John shouted indignantly. "Is my mother going to marry that old _______?" 

Abby looked serenely at her husband over her work. "There is no need to swear and rant," she said. "The thing is decided. He has admired her for years. Anyone but you, would have seen it long ago. But you had best let her tell you herself." Abby's face showed infinite satisfaction. "I have done all I could to further the match. Your mother will have companionship as she grows old. You and your brothers have shown scant sympathy, to my way of thinking. Lieutenant Hall is a fine man; old widowers are very amiable toward womenkind. Moreover he has a commodious house.  And if he works with his hands - why, have I not heard you say often that manual labor is ennobling?" Abby folded her work, rose from her chair. "I might add," she finished, "that your mother's marriage will enable you to move your wife, your daughter, and your son to Boston at our mutual convenience."

John Hall, son of John and Mary (Newell) Hall, born at Rehoboth, 27 March 1698 (VR, 630); died 27 September 1780, in 83rd year, buried in Hancock Cemetery, Braintree (Braintree Old, 133; "Old Braintree Cem." 17).

John Hall, a cooper, married first, at Hingham, 27 April 1732 (Hist. Hingham, 2:283, 408), Jerusha King, who died there 1 December 1745, age 35 (Braintree Fams, #2100, Hist. Hingham, 2:283); they had four children recorded in Hingham. He married second at Braintree, 12 June 1748 (Braintree Fams, #2100), Sarah Marsh, daughter of John and Sarah (Wilson) Marsh (Ch Rec, Braintree Fams, #3249), born at Braintree, 3 March 1704 (VR, 684); died 23 February 1765, age 60, buried Hancock Cemetery, Braintree (Braintree Old, 133, "Old Braintree Cem,", 17). Susannah is buried next to her first husband and John Hall is buried next to his second wife, obituaries call her Mrs. Hall, but the cemetery monument makes no note of her second marriage.

In the name of God Amen, I Jonathan Hall, the Eldest of that name in Raynham in Bristol County in New England being in the Sixtieth year of my age and at this time in reasonable good health and of sound mind and memory, Blessed be God for it, I do make this my Last Will and Testament as followeth,

First I give and bequeath my Soul to God that gave me it and Redeemed it by the blood of his Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly I give and bequeath my body to the grave to be Decently buried by my Executor herein after named in hopes of a Joyfull Resurrection, and as to my outward and worldly Estate I give and dispose of it as followeth:

Firstly I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Hall after my Honest Debts and funeral charges are paid the life use and benefit of my now dwelling house and barn as also the use and Improvement of all my land Adjoining to my said house and barn, as also the use and Improvement of my New Lot Joyning to the way that Leads from the Country Rhode to Elnathan Jones^es land and also one third part of my orchard together with four acres of Improved Land that ___ there to Adjoining, as also all my Land at a place Called the Hammer Beam Except what I have already given to my Son Jonathan Hall by Deed and one acre more at the westward end of my Land there at the Corner in Joseph Jones^es Line Adjoining to Deacon Shaw's Land where my Son Jonathan Hall has lately set some apple trees. Improvement to Lot given to his wife after her death or marriage, the dwelling house and the land adjoined thereto, as well as his new field and one-sixth of his right in the undivided lands in Taunton Old Township are given to his Son, Amos Hall.

To his Son Mason Hall, his pasture land at Great Tearall so called and also the tract of Land in Raynham near Bridgewater line at ^{Titticut plain} and all land adjoining thereto called Fifty acres more or less, also one quarter part of his right to the undivided Land in Taunton Old Township. Mason Hall to pay to Jonathan's daughter Hannah Hall, within two years of his death, the sum of Five Pounds.

Samuel³ Hall died 1736/37 and he did not leave a will. His estate was administered in 1741 and an order issued for the division of his property in 1743. The division names his widow, Mercy Hall, Amariah Hall, his only son, Hannah Hall his eldest daughter, Mercy Hall his second daughter, and Patience Hall, the youngest daughter. The burial location of Samuel Hall has not been determined.

Samuel's sisters, Esther³ Hall and Hannah³ Hall are further identified in the above mentioned administration papers by their husbands' names, when a legacy is paid from Samuel's estate: "To said Blake [Samuel] and wife and to Barnabas Crossman and wife of Middleborough (by ye last will of said deceased's father), a Legacy -- one of them from the share of the deceased. Paid Ten Pounds".

John sat under the ministry of Rev. Nehemiah Hobert, in the First Congregational Church of Cambridge, until his 17th year of age.  Mr Hobert died 1716, age 64; he was a Fellow in Harvard College, and in a memorial sermon for him, notice is made of a remark of Deacon Hall concerning his preaching; it appears evident that John Hall lived in or near Cambridge all of his life and that he held the office of a deacon.

There had earlier been the possibility that Jeremiah was the twin of Benjamin Hall. This has been disproven by ancestors of Benjamin's Hall (their father).

Jeremiah Hall was one of the original proprietors of Upper Ashuelot and drew lot No. 2 on the east side, south end of Main Street where he built his house and lived while there. He was one of the leaders in settling the township and one of the first party of eight persons that went to Keene in 1734 and began the settlement. He was also one of the party that went to Keene in 1735 and was chosen moderator of the proprietors' meeting in the absence of Capt. Sady; and again in May, 1736, he was the leader of the party that went to Keene and spent the summer in building cabins and preparing for the next year's settlement. Again in the spring of 1737, he led the party that went to Keene for permanent settlement, was the standing moderator of the proprietors at the general court.

His name is first on the list of members at the original organization of the church in 1738.  He was designated in the records in 1738 as "Capt.," and he was also a physician, the first in town, and was called Dr. Hall of Keene in the account of the scouting party, as given in the Annals, that caused the capture of Pierre Raimbault, near Northfield, in 1747.

In 1744, he buried his daughter Kezia in Keene at the age of 16 years of age and ina son, Benjamin, three years old. He buried his wife, Dorothy, in Keene in January 1753 and soon afterwards removed to Pembroke, MA. 

He was a Physician there in 1756, as appointed Surgeon's Mate, afterward Surgeon (Chirurgeon) of Col. Joseph Thatcher's regiment in the expedition to Crown Point in 1757.  In 1758, from March to November, he was surgeon of Col. Thomas Doty's regiment for the reduction of Canada.  In 1759, March 31 to December 31, Surgeon of Col. John Thomas' regiment in Halifax.

Edward was a proprietor in the Town of Wrentham, MA in 1734 and 1742.  He was a Sergeant, Ensign and Lieutenant, in the Colonial Service.

He removed to Uxbridge in 1749 and bought 200 acres for 2000 pounds.

Although all of the historical research on the ancestry of Ensign Edward Hall suggests that he was a son of Benjamin Hall as a descendant of the Halls of Rehoboth, no birth record has been found to confirm this, and, as of October 2022, no DNA evidence exists to verify it either.

Dean Crawford Smith in his book, "The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton: 1878-1908, Part IV" (by Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Boston, NEHGS, 2000) documents that Edward was a son of John Hall (1666-c.1737) and Esther Bell who are descendants of the Halls of Taunton.

Until evidence can verify this one way ot the other, I am leaving both possible pedigrees available with a preference for Edward being a son of Benjamin.

"Preserved and his wife, Abigail Whitney have nagged at me for a while as I've never been able to find a definite death date for them. Apparently, his Will has become available on Ancestry only recently as none of the trees on Ancestry have that information.

"Preserved wrote his will on 20 July 1780 stating that he was very sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory. He names his beloved wife Abigail so if this is the same first wife, Abigail Whitney, she did not die until sometime after 20 July 1780.

"Preserved's Will was presented for Probate on 30 August 1780 so he died sometime between writing his Will on 20 July and when it was presented on 30 August in 1780. He names his wife, Abigail, sons Timothy, Jonathan, Jeremiah and Josiah; the heirs of his deceased son, Nathan, and his daughter, Abigail Stanley (I've found that she married Nathaniel Stanley). He does not name heirs of his son Abijah so I am assuming he, Abijah, died without issue and his daughter, Esther, never married.

"For his wife, Abigail Whitney, I've also found some differing information. According to birth records, Abigail was born on 22 May 1708 in Wrentham, Norfolk, Massachusetts to Josiah Whitney and his wife, Mary. Mary's surname has not been discovered, but there are a couple of spotty marriage records for Josiah Whitney and Mary. One record not giving a marriage date but a date of 1666 for her birth; the other giving a marriage date of 1686. It was after Mary died (and I believe I've found what could be her death record) that Josiah married second to Abigail Marten, so I think it is correct that Mary is Abigail's mother, not Abigail Marten. If the death record is her's, Mary Whitney died in Wrentham on 18 July 1710. Josiah married Abigail Marten on 3 Nov 1713 in Wrentham, so that would have been too late for Abigail Marten to have been Abigail Whitney's mother.

"Unfortunately, a death date for Abigail (Whitney) Hall has not been found nor the burial location for her and Preserved. I presume that they are both buried in Hallowell, Maine."

Jonathan lived his entire life in Raynham, more particularly in that area known as Raynham Center. He was a prominent member and deacon of the Raynham Congregational Church, and he served in numerous town positions. As the eldest son of Jonathan and Sarah, he inherited extensive acreage as stipulated in his father's will. He appeared on the Raynham Tax Records for 1746, assessed for both real and personal property (Old Colony Historical Society, Taunton, MA).

Many of the town records are missing, but of those surviving Jonathan's name appeared in all of the accounts, with his town positions having ranged from selectman to constable, treasurer and moderator.

In the Name of God Amen!

I Jonathan Hall, the Eldest of that name in Raynham in the County of Bristol and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being advanced in age, but thro' devine goodness of a sound and disposing mind, do in the first place give my soul to that God who gave it, and my body to the grave, decently to be interr'd by my Executor, In a firm belief a Resurrection to come, and in regard to my worldly interest, I give and dispose of it in the manner following ~ viz

1. I give to my beloved Wife Hannah Hall, after the payment of my just debts and funeral charges '97 the best room in my dwelling house with a privilege in the Buttery, Oven and Cellar, as much as may be necessary for her own use; Also the easterly half of my Barn with a right of passing to and from it, at all times; To have, use and enjoy all the above privileges during her natural life '97 Also I give to my said wife the improvement of all my land lying on the south easterly side of the Brook which comes thro' the land of Samuel Jones, below his barn, and on said Brook as it now runs, to the bridge below my house '97 Together with one half of my orchard, adjoining to ye house, during her natural life; also I give unto my sd wife, ye use of my half of the pew in the Meeting House during her life and after her, I give it to my Son Seth Hall, to him and his Heirs forever.

2. I give to my Son Linus Hall, the remainder of my dwelling house together with a strip of land from the Brook below the house to the road before the door, to be two rods wide from the line which passes between my Son Seth Hall's house and mine, a straight line from the Brook to the road '97 To him, his Heirs and assigns forever, together with the whole of my dwelling house after the death of my said wife.

3. I give to my Son Seth Hall, half an acre of land where his barn now stands, to him and his Heirs, immediately after my decease, together with the westerly part of my barn, one half my orchard, with all the remainder of my lands lying on the westerly side of the above mentioned Brook, immediately after my decease, with all the lands on ye other side of the Brook, after my wife's decease, to him and his Heirs and assigns forever on condition that he the said Seth Hall pay out the following Legacies ~ viz,

Unto my Son Silas Hall five pounds, in one year after my decease, '97 To my Son Hezekiah Hall, ten pounds, in two years after my decease, provided he brings no account against my Estates, which if he does, Tis my will that the amount be deducted from the above named sum '97 also, that he pay unto my Son Jonathan Hall in three years after my death the sum of twelve pounds. And in four years after my decease that my Son Seth Hall pay unto my Son Obed Hall, the sum of twelve pounds '97 and that he also pay unto my Son Ebenezer Hall the same sum within five years after my decease '97 also I order my Son Seth Hall to pay to my Daughter Lydia Richmond two pounds in six years after my decease '97 and to my Daughter Jemima Williams one pound ten shillings in seven years after my death; all the above Legacies I order to be paid out in farm produce at the Common Market Price '97 I also give to my Wife Hannah Hall, all the household goods she bro't with her upon marriage, with all the household goods that she and I have procured since we lived together, with two of my best cows and one swine to be at her own disposal '97 The remainder of my stock, cattle, swine and moveables not disposed of before, I give them all unto my Son Seth Hall and to his Heirs forever '97 and I do Constitute and appoint my Son Seth Hall to be the Sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament.

What these debtors claims were, we do not know, as no further Administration papers have been found. Neither do we know what happened to the extensive land holdings that Jonathan had inherited from his father. We are trying to secure and sort out all of the various deeds for Jonathan Hall. What we do know is that the Legacies that Jonathan had requested in his Will, to be distributed to his children over a seven year period after his death, did not happen. An inventory of his Estate was conducted by Major Shaw, Samuel Hall, and Daniel White on March 16, 1792; it amounted to 21 Pounds, 2 Shillings and 3 Pence. The inventory was allowed April 2, 1792.

Andrew Hall appeared as chief mourner at the funeral of his brother-in-law, Ellis Callender, when in 1764, the then recent agreement of non-consumption of mourning articles (among other) was first carried out; and a large procession of
gentlemen followed the funeral as a mark of sympathy with the course of Mr. Hall and his wife.  In fact, it was made the occasion of a political demonstration.  We have the name of only one child, Sarah, b. 3 Jun 1749.  The widow Sarah, was

Bathsheba, the daughter of Jeremiah Hall and Dorothy (Hill) his wife was born August ye 12, 1726. (Wrentham, Mass. Vital Records.)

About 1746, probably in Upper Ashuelot (Keene, NH), Bathsheba married Ebenezer Day, but their marriage record apparently did not survive the turbulent times on the frontier. (The birth of the first child for whom there is a record occurred on April 18, 1747 when Ebenezer was nearly 31 years old. Bathsheba would not reach her 21st birthday until August.)

Ebenezer and Bathsheba's granddaughter, Almira Fenno-Gendrot, claimed that Bathsheba was the daughter of Jeremiah Hall. Benjamin Hall was commissioned Lieutenant by the Crown; his son Benjamin was probably also a Lieutenant; on a list of a company of foot soldiers in 1773, were Lt. Benjamin Hall, Samuel Hall, Jesse Hall and Ziba Hall; on the alarm list 1773, were Benjamin Hall, Jr. and Nathan Hall; among the signers of the Association Test of 1776, were Jesse Hall and Samuel Hall, but Lt. Benjamin Hall refused to sign it; Lt. Benjamin preserved a coat of arms. 

In 1785, among the purchasers of pews in the new meeting-house in Keene, were Benjamin Hall, Esq., Benjamin and Hannaniah Hall.  In 1800, Dr. Ziba Hall protested against being taxed for support of the minister, being a Universalist (he lived one time in Lebanon).  In 1789, Benjamin Hall, Esq., was on a committee in Winchenden to obtain materials for bulding a meeting-house, and Dr. Ziba Hall was on a committee to select the place or site for its location.

Benjamin, along with the children known by name, also had a daughter whose name is not known at this time, who married Maj. Ames of the Rising Sun Hotel, Boston, MA.  Lt Benjamin Hall and his sons James, Hannaniah, and Josiah, being tories, removed to Canada and settled near Toronto.  He was a large man weighing some 400 lbs.

The following is from the History of Keene, Biographical Sketches: 

"Lieut. Benjamin Hall.  His name first appears in the records in 1761, when he bought of William Smeed and his wife Phebe (who had removed to Walpole), six original house-lots - numbers 12, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27 - and seventeen other lots of the several divisions of land in the township. He also owned, afterwards, house-lots numbered 16, 17, and 18 and much other land in town, amounting to several thousand acres. In 1768, he sold to Jesse Clark a farm of 100 acres 'lying in the crotch of Ash Swamp Brook,' where Mr. Clark and his son, Jesse, Jr., kept tavern for many years, and built the house west of the small pond, since known as the Ingersoll house.  In 1783, he bought of Dr. Gideon Tiffany, then of Hanover, NH, a farm of sity acres, with saw and grist mills, on the North branch - the mills since known as the peg factory.
   
"His wife's name was Melatiah, and his children were:  Nathaniel, Ziba, Hannaniah, James, Benjamin, Josiah, Bela; and a daughter Betty, who married Maj. Luther Eames, who kept a public house with Aaron Eames.

"Lieut. Hall was selectman nine years between 1762 and 1774, and again in 1784-5-6.  He represented the town in the legislature in 1771-2-3-4, and again in 1784-5 and 1787.  He was a lieutenant of the militia company here in 1773, but in 1776 he refused to sign the Association Test, and was dropped from all official positions. He was not, however, actrive against the patriots, was considered a man of sound judgment and discretion, and after the war was again entrusted with responsible offices, as appears above.  He died in 1805."

Notes:

Josiah Hall was born in Wrentham May 16, 1743.  He married Amiable (Anna) Allen who was born December 14, 1741. Josiah and Amiable removed to Winthrop, Maine and settled on Lot #11 in Winthrop. He came to Winthrop from Wrentham before the incorporation of the town.

"HALL, JOSIAH, Winthrop, Private, Capt. Oliver Colborn's Company of Minute Men, Col. Arnolds regiment.  Enlisted July 25, 1775; service 20 days."  (From Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War", Vol 7, page 96.)

He was prominent in town affairs while in Winthrop. He was the Town Clerk from 1771 to 1778 and then became a Town Selectman in 1778 ("History of Winthrop" by Everett S. Stockpole). 

The Decleration of Independence were spread upon the Town's records 'in his full, round and legible hand.'  He was one of the members of the Committee of Correspondent, Inspection and Safety in 1778  (From "History of Winthrop" by Everett S. Stockpole.)

About 1782, they removed to Washington Plantation, now Mt. Vernon.

Josiah and Amiable (Allen) Hall's first child was Betsey Hall, born 11 Aug 1763 in Massachusetts (probably Wrentham but I cannot find a record) and yes, I know, that is prior to the parents marriage.

Betsey married 1788 in Readfield, Kennebec, Maine, to John Shed(d), b. 10 Aug 1762, Tewksbury, Middlesex, MA, d. 29 Sep 1842 in Vienna, Kennebec, Maine. Betsey died 6 Jul 1849 in Vienna, Kennebec, Maine.

Josiah Hall does not appear in the US Census after 1800, so likely he died BEF. 1810. No records for his death have been found.
