    Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War first as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, 27th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Captain on Company F, 121st New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at two separate occasions - the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill, Virginia, and at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on November 7, 1863. His citation reads "Although wounded at Gaines Mill, Va., he remained on duty and participated in the battle with his company. At Rappahannock Station, Va., while acting as aide, rendered gallant and prompt assistance in reforming the regiments inside the enemy's works". His Medal was awarded to him on August 17, 1891. Later in the war he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 43rd United States Colored Troops, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the assault on the enemy's works at the mine before Petersburg, Va" (an action where he was wounded and lost his right arm as a result).
