Ithiel built the first saw and grist mill in Brunswick, VT.

He came into the town in the fall of 1799, and contracted with the proprietors to build the mills in one year, and as an encouragement for building the same, the proprietors voted him the right of pitching 400 acres of undivided land, provided he did not select it in more than three places.

Ithiel established the original Cargill home beside Paul Stream, later famous as the Beattie place. He also opened the first Brunswick hotel. Soon he was the leading citizen, ahead of earlier pioneers. In six elections he was sent to the Vermont legislature. He owned and operated the farm and mills more than twenty years.

His two oldest sons went to the town of Wenlock and commenced in the solitude of the forest to make themselves a farm. After chopping down some fifteen or twenty acres of trees, Ithiel Jr was killed by the falling of a tree, in 1822. The next spring, John returned to continue the improvements, and cleared up a large farm, becoming a worth and independent farmer.

Ithiel, with the rest of his family moved to Morgan VT in Orleans Cty in 1834.

Ithiel married Lucy Grosvenor in 1796. Lucy (daughter of Rev. Asa Grosvenor and Hannah Buckley Prescott Hall) was born on 28 Jun 1773 in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut; died on 23 Oct 1840 in Morgan, Orleans County, Vermont; was buried after 23 Oct 1840 in Cargill Cemetery, Morgan, Orleans County, Vermont.
