GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF NOAH WEBSTER

    IMMIGRANT, 1635 "Hopewell"

A BIOGRAPHY OF ALICE RICHARDS BRADFORD, by Laurence Overmire (9th great grandson), June 2016:

Alice Richards was baptised Apr. 7, 1629 in Pitminster, Somerset, England, the daughter of Thomas and Wealthean (Loring) Richards. She immigrated with her parents on the ship "Hopewell" in 1635.

Alice married William Bradford, Jr., the son of Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower, on Jan. 28, 1649/50 in Plymouth.

Alice gave birth to ten children: John, William, Thomas, Alice, Mercy, Hannah, Melatiah, Samuel, Mary and Sarah.

Maj. William Bradford succeeded Myles Standish as the chief military man in the colony. He was the commander of the Plymouth forces in King Philip's War. He was wounded in battle at Narragansett Fort and carried the musket ball in his flesh the rest of his life. He also served as Assistant Treasurer and Deputy Governor of Plymouth, residing in what is now Kingston on the south side of Jones River in the same house his father lived in from 1627-47.

Alice died on Dec. 12, 1671, at the age of about 44, and was buried in Plymouth.

WARNING: Various birth dates are shown for Alice in various sources. It is not clear which might be the truth. William Richard Cutter's New England Families, e.g., claims she was born Jun 17, 1624. Mayflower Birth and Deaths shows 1627. Others show her b. 6 Jun 1627, still others 16 Jun 1627. NEHGR shows she was b. abt. 1627.

    ----------

A BIOGRAPHY OF MAJ. JOHN BRADFORD, by Laurence Overmire (8th great grandson), Sept. 2016:

John Bradford was born Feb. 20, 1652/53 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, the eldest of ten children of Maj. William Bradford and his wife Alice Richards. He was the grandson of Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower.

John married Mercy Warren on Jan. 6, 1673/74 in Plymouth. She was the daughter of Joseph and Priscilla (Faunce) Warren, and the granddaughter of Richard Warren of the Mayflower. John and Mercy shared common ancestors in Alexander Carpenter and Priscilla Dillon, who were the father and mother-in-law of Gov. William Bradford.

John and Mercy had seven children: John (1675-1724), Alice (1677-1746), Abigail (1679-1697), Mercy (1681-1738), Samuel (1683-1740), Priscilla (1686-1732), William (1688-1728).

John inherited Gov. William Bradford's precious manuscript, "Of Plimouth Plantation," one of the most important documents of early American history. He passed it down to his son Samuel. At some point, the work was loaned to Rev. Thomas Prince who was using it as a reference for his own book that he was writing. He kept it in his library in Boston's Old South Church. The British, who occupied the Old South Church during the Revolution, then got hold of it. Later it turned up in the Bishop of London's palace and was only returned to the state of Massachusetts, after some negotiation, in 1897.

Major Bradford was prominent in civic affairs. He was not only a military leader, but served as representative to the First General Court at Boston and helped to incorporate Plymouth as a separate town.

Maj. Bradford's home in Kingston, built in 1675, is still standing and open to the public today. According to tradition, the Indians attempted to burn John's house during King Philip's War. The Major discovered the fire. He spied an Indian on Abrams Hill waving a blanket and shouting to his fellows, and shot him. But on approach, he could not find the body. After the war, the Indian met Bradford and showed him the scars of his wound.

Maj. John Bradford died on Dec. 8, 1736, in Kingston, at the age of about 84, and was laid to rest in the Old Burying Bround at First Church in Kingston.

WARNING: Some show John's middle name as Kingston, which seems odd, especially since he was born in Plymouth, not Kingston. It may be that somewhere someone called him John "of Kingston" and that somehow became misinterpreted as a middle name that has since been repeated in error. We haven't seen a primary source that lists his middle name as Kingston. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, please contact us.

A BIOGRAPHY OF LT. SAMUEL BRADFORD, by Laurence Overmire (7th great grandson), Aug. 2008:

Samuel Bradford was born in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Dec. 23, 1683, the fifth of seven children of Maj. John Bradford and Mercy Warren. His father was the grandson of Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower. His mother was the granddaughter of Richard Warren of the Mayflower.

On Oct. 21, 1714, at Plympton, Massachusetts, 31-year-old Samuel married 17-year-old Sarah Gray, the daughter of Edward and Mary Smith Gray of Tiverton, Rhode Island. Sarah was the half-sister of Samuel Gray who was the second man shot at the Boston Massacre and the first American to die in the Revolutionary War. She was also the aunt of Capt. Robert Gray, the American explorer who discovered the Columbia River and staked America's claim to the Oregon Territory.

Sarah gave birth to ten children: John, Gideon, William (died in childhood), Mary, Sarah, William, Mercy (died in infancy), Abigail, Phebe, and Samuel.

Samuel inherited property from his father's estate. He also inherited Gov. William Bradford's precious manuscript, "Of Plimouth Plantation," one of the most important documents of early American history. The work was loaned to Rev.

Samuel Bradford was a leading citizen of Plympton. He was Selectman several times, a Representative to the General Court, and Lieutenant of Plympton Battery. He died in Plympton on Mar. 26, 1740, at the age of 56, and was laid to rest in Ye Olde Burial Grounds there.

A BIOGRAPHY OF GIDEON BRADFORD, ESQ., by Laurence Overmire (6th great grandson), Sept. 2016:

Gideon Bradford was born in Plympton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Oct. 17, 1718, the second of ten children of Lt. Samuel Bradford and Sarah Gray. His father was the great grandson of Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower. His mother was the half-sister of Samuel Gray, the first American to die in the Revolutionary War. She was also the aunt of Capt. Robert Gray, the American explorer who discovered the Columbia River and staked America's claim to the Oregon Territory.

On Oct. 8, 1741, at Plymouth, Massachusetts, 23-year-old Gideon married 24-year-old Jane Paddock, the daughter of Deacon Ichabod Paddock and Joanna Faunce. Jane gave birth to seven children: Levi, Joseph, Sarah, Samuel, Gideon, Calvin, and Jennie.

Gideon lived in the northern part of Plympton near the Old Furnace. In 1761, he moved to the southern part of town and purchased about 200 acres. He was the owner of the Old Forge on the Winnetuxet River, which he operated until they stopped making iron in 1774. At that point, he moved to Charlotte Furnace in the southern part of Carver. An important and respected member of the community, Gideon held various positions of authority including Justice of the Peace, Selectman, and Assessor, as well as moderator of Plympton town meetings.

He died in Plympton on Oct. 18, 1793, at the age of 74 and was laid to rest in Ye Olde Burial Grounds in Plympton (now Hillcrest Cemetery).
