    British Army Officer.

The son of Lord Randolph Spencer-Churchill and Jennie (Jerome) Spencer-Churchill (and the younger brother of Winston Churchill), he had a privileged upbringing.

He was educated at Harrow, and commissioned a lieutenant in the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars in 1898. Fought in the Second Boer War, and was mentioned in despatches. In February 1900, he was wounded at the battle of Tugela Heights during General Sir Redvers Buller's expedition to relieve Ladysmith.

In 1908, he married Lady Gwendoline Theresa Mary Bertie, a daughter of Montagu Arthur Bertie (7th Earl of Abingdon). A father of three, his yougest daughter, Anne Clarissa, married future Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden (1st Earl of Avon).

During World War One, Churchill held many important staff positions and was again mentioned in despatches. He served on the staffs of Field Marshal Sir John French, General Sir Ian Hamilton, and General (later Field Marshal) Sir William Birdwood. His duties led to posts on both the Western Front and at Gallipoli. In 1918, for his service during the war, he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), and the French Army bestowed upon him the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour. When his home was destroyed by a German bombing raid during World war Two, he joined his brother, who was then prime minister, at 10 Downing Street.
