    Notes:

Edward Hall, carpenter, of Henborough, England, son of Francis Hall, yeoman, arrived in Plymouth in 1636. He was a proprietor in 1637. He settled next in Duxbury, Mass. He removed to Taunton, Mass. where he was in the employ of Francis Doughty in 1640. He was at Duxbury again in 1642 and 1643. He then removed to Bridgewater in 1644. He later moved to Braintree, Mass. where he served against the Narragansetts in 1645 and where his first two children were born. He then removed to Rehoboth, Mass. in 1655 where the rest of his eight children were born.

A certificate of his health was made on 15 Jul 1640. "I, Thomas Dudley Eqr. Governor of the Juridicon of Masschusetts Bay in New England Doe hereby certify under all manner of persons whome it may concern that Edward Hall late of the parish of Henborough in the County of Gloucester carpenter and now of Duxbury in New England sonne of Francis Hall late of Henborough aforesaid yeoman Deceased as appeareth unto me by his owne oath & the oath of James Smith marriner is now in the making hereof in full life and health. In testimony whereof at the request of said Edward Hall I have caused the Common Seale of our Colony to be hereunto affixed the fifteenth day of July in the sixteenth yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles now King of England &c. Annoqr Dmi 1640."

Edward Hall took the Oath of Fidelities which made him a Freeman in 1658.

Another history of Edward Hall, as documented in the book, "HALLS OF NEW ENGLAND, Genealogical and Biographical" by Rev. David B. Hall, A.M. of Duanesburgh, NY reads as follows:

    HALLS OF REHOBOTH, MASS.

    The emigrant ancestor was:

(Family 1.) Edward Hall: probably the freeman of 1636, at Salisbury. He was at Duxboro, Mass., in 1636, 7, 8; at Braintree, Mass, 1640; at Taunton, Mass., 1641, at Duxboro again 1642 and 3; at Bridgewater, Mass., perhaps 1644, where allotment was made to him 1645, March 28. It is believed that he owned I-54 part of the town from 1645 to 1650, when he withdrew; had land apportioned to him in Rehoboth, 1645; mention was made of goodman Hall of Duxboro, by John Gove of Charlestown, Mass., in his will made in 1647 (see N.E.G.H. Reg., Vol 7, p. 170). The administrators of the will of John Gove, viz.: Samuel Scarborough, John Gove of Roxbury, and Richard Hall, gave bond, Oct 26, 1693 (see Vol. 31, p. 104 Gen. Reg.). Edward Hall had a family in Braintree, Mass., from 1650 to 1655. He removed to Rehoboth, 1655, where he was No. 41 out of 49 persons who drew in order of the settlers estates, for meadow lands which lie on the north side of the town, at town meeting of Rehoboth, held June 22, 1658. Lots were also drawn May 26, 1668, for meadow lands in the north purchase, now Attleboro, Cumberland, RI, and parts of Norton and Mansfield. The name of John Woodcock was next to that of Edward Hall in both
drawings. (A daughter of Andrew Hall of Newton, married Mr. Woodcock, of Bridgewater.) Edward Hall made his will Nov 23, 1670, died Nov 27, 1670. His estate was valued at 84 pounds. The name of his wife was Esther or Hester, who survived him. The proprietory records of Rehoboth credits Edward Hall with a 50 pound right of commonage in 1658. And the Widow, Hester Hall with the same right in 1671; and John Hall with the same in 1685, and with only one-half from 1697 to 1715.

"Married in Rehoboth, Dec 24, 1674, Thomas Jordan and Esther Hall." It is possible this was not the widow of Edward Hall, but probably his daughter, yet there are no births of Thomas Jordan's children recorded in Rehoboth. The children of Edward and Hester Hall were born in Rehoboth, except the first two who were born in Braintree.

The following is from the History of the Town of Duxbury, Massachusetts with Genealogical Registers by Justin Winsor, 1849 (page 263)

"1. Edward, Dux., 1638, permitted to build in Dux.; 1637, ten acres at G. H. path; 1638, sold his house to Wm. Witherell; 1641, he appears of Taunton; 1642, had a house at Hounds ditch; 1645, prop. of Bridgew.; 1652, left the colony a debtor.

An Edward Hall sold, 1665, land in Duxbury. An Edward was of Cambridge 1636, ad. 1638 (perhaps s. of Jon of Lynn) and d. 1669, leaving w. Sarah, and Joseph, Ephraim, and several daughters. An Edward of Braintree m. Hester, and had John 1651, and Hester Oct 23, 1654.

The following are from Plymouth Colony Records, Court Orders:

28 Oct 1645, The pPporcon and Names of the Souldier in eich Towne sent forth in the late Expedition against the Narrohiggansett & their Confederate. The first company, vix, xvjteene (16), went forth the 15th day of August 1645. (Edward Hall was one of eighteen men listed. He remained 17 days on this expedition).

Edward Hall is buried in an unmarked grave (or a grave marked by a common fieldstone with no markings) in Newman Cemetery in Rumford, RI. This part of Rhode Island was once part of Rehoboth, MA.

(Research):Further information on Edward Hall was found in the Appendix of the "Halls of New England" on page 695. This information reads as follows:

"There is no positive evidence that Edward Hall, of Braintree and Rehoboth, was the same Edward who was at Salisbury in 1636, or the Edward of Bridgewater, or the Edward of Duxboro, or of Taunton. The Edward Hall of "Duxborrow, " had a farm contiguous to that of George Hall, afterwards of Taunton, " he built a house upon it, " and "had a garden plot." He appears to have been a headstrong man, had law suits and difficulty with authorities.

A quit claim deed dated in 1715, is found, in which the names of Edward Hall's children are given. Samuel , of Taunton, Thomas of Dedham, Andrew of Newton and Benjamin of Wrentham, relinquished their claim to the estate of their father Edward Hall, and mother Esther Hall, in Rehoboth and Attleboro, in favor of their brothers John Hall of Rehoboth and Preserved Hall of Hingham. August 9, 1998.

It is the distinct possibility that the Ship that Edward Hall(e) arrived to America aboard was the Mary Rose, a marriner of which was associated to the ship by the name of James Smith. Thomas Lechford, Esq., 1638 - 1641. In one of Edward's letters home to England he asked that 10 pounds and 10 shillings be paid to James Smith for Commodities received, those being 2 barrels of beife at 40 shillings p peece, 3 barrells of oatmeals at 6 shillings p bushel, and two pieces flanning of 63 yardes at 8 pence "for the use of himself and his brother John."

Edward married Hester about 1650 in Probably In Braintree, MA. Hester was born in in England.; died in in Rehoboth, MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 3

  1. 5.  John Hall Descendancy chart to this point (2.Edward2, 1.Margaret1) was born on 23 Nov 1650 in Braintree, MA; died in Sep 1721 in Rehoboth, MA.

    Notes:

John was a soldier in King Phillip's war and was in the swamp fight in 1675. He was in the Narragansett expedition in 1689 and was advanced 16 pounds to sustain the war.

The following information was provided by Kathleen (Shaw) Mackell in her Genealogical History dated 1984:

"John Hall, the oldest son of Edward and Esther Hall, was born in Braintree in 1651. He as only nineteen when his father died and he probably stayed with his mother to help with the farm. When King Philip's War broke out in 1675, he was one
of thirteen men drafted from Rehoboth. For some reason, his name was omitted in Bodge's History of King Philip's War but in Old Rehoboth records (Rehoboth Rate Book II), he is listed as receiving 2 pounds, 18 shillings, and 8 pence and serving
39 days in 1675. He later advanced money to carry on the war. After the war was over, he returned to the farm, married Mary Newell in 1684, and was listed as a proprietor and inhabitant in Rehoboth in 1689. John Hall had land given to him by
his father, Edward, which was evidently in the original Rehoboth North Purchase. It was fifty acres along both sides of the Ten Mile River and in a place called the Falls. He solt it to Samuel Penfield and John Stevenson and they later sold
    it to Thomas Daggett."

The Plymouth Colon Records show that John Hall was born 23 Nov 1650 at Braintree, MA versus 28 Jan 1651 as recorded in the book "Halls of New England" by Rev. David B. Hall 1883. The date of 28 Jan 1651 could be a baptismal date.

(Research):John Hall(2), Edward(1): The number of his children is not certain, or the order to their births. Mary, Esther and Hannah gave their portions of their father's estate to their brother Edward for 60 pounds, to take care of their mother and
invalid sister Martha. And in 1721, Edward Hall and sisters Mary, Esther, Hannah and Martha, spinster, gave deed of property in Rehoboth to their brother John of Taunton. The word spinsters in the record should be in the singular number and
has reference only to Martha. John Hall(3) of Taunton was not the Lt. John Hall who m. Hannah Penniman. He sold a house in Rehoboth partly finished in 1722 and was in Braintree in 1763.
The above came from the Appendix of the "Halls of New England", page 295. I, Joseph S. Hall, Jr., do not understand why this was written, especially the part about Hannah Penniman or of John(3) being a Lieutenant, because none of this was
mentioned in the first place in the original section of the book named above on page 528. There may have been some question as to this information when Rev. David B. Hall first received it or during his research, but to mention at the end of
the book and not mention in the original writing on page 528 is somewhat confusing to me.

    Other Events:

    Notes:

This named person, Preserved Hall, may have been the Preserved Hall who, with his wife Lydia in 1709 gave a certificate of good character to a woman accused of being a witch. (See New England Historical Society Reg., Vol. 5, p.263).

The book, "HALLS OF NEW ENGLAND" shows March 20 or 30, 1663 as Preserved's date of birth.

Preserved was a Cooper and a Constable in 1702. In his will dated at Hingham, 1 Aug 1740, and presented the 14th day of the same month, he give to Hannah "the improvement of 1/2 of my estate while she remains a widow. " "To the children of my

  6. 11.  Andrew Hall Descendancy chart to this point (2.Edward2, 1.Margaret1) was born on 10 May 1665 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA; died in Dec 1756 in Newton, Middlesex, MA.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Weaver/Farmer

    Notes:

Andrew and his first wife, Susanna Capen, lived in Rehoboth, MA, County of Bristol from 1665 to 1691 then they removed to the town of Newton, MA, County of Middlesex, to a residence on Oak Hill from 1691 to 1756. After the death of his first
wife on 18 Aug 1736, he married Mary Bennett on 12 Oct 1737. All of Andrew's children were born in Newton, MA.

According to the History of Newton, Massachusetts (1630-1880), Andrew Hall settled there in 1695. It also states that Andrew Hall came into the South part of Newton about 1695, and bought 43 acres of land in 1695, for 22 pounds, of Thomas Wiswall, son of Capt. Noah Wiswall. The tract was bounded east by Deham highway, west by John Kenrick and the widow of Joseph Parker, north by John Woodward, Jr., Samuel Truesdale, and John Kenrick, Jr., south by Deacon James Trowbridge.

According to the book "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs, Worcester County, Volume 2," the Coat of Arms in the possession of this family is like that of the Medford Halls, and it is very likely that many of the immigrant Halls were brothers or
near relatives. His will was dated September 30, 1748 and made his son, Edward, executor and confirmed to him the homestead already deeded to him. His will was proved 1757, Newton, MA.

Andrew married Susanna Capen in 1691 in Newton, MA. Susanna (daughter of Lt. John Capen and Susanna Barsham) was born on 16 Sep 1664 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA; died on 18 Aug 1736 in Newton, Middlesex, MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

There had earlier been the possibility that Jeremiah was the twin of Benjamin Hall. This has been disproven by ancestors of Benjamin's Hall (their father).

Jeremiah Hall was one of the original proprietors of Upper Ashuelot and drew lot No. 2 on the east side, south end of Main Street where he built his house and lived while there. He was one of the leaders in settling the township and one of the
first party of eight persons that went to Keene in 1734 and began the settlement. He was also one of the party that went to Keene in 1735 and was chosen moderator of the proprietors' meeting in the abscence of Capt. Sady; and again in May,
1736, he was the leader of the party that went to Keene and spent the summer in building cabins and preparing for the next year's settlement. Again in the spring of 1737, he led the party that went to Keene for permanent settlement, was the
standing moderator of the proprietors at the general court. His name is first on the list of members at the original organization of the church in 1738. He was designated in the records in 1738 as "Capt.," and he was also a physician, the
first in town, and was called Dr. Hall of Keene in the account of the scouting party, as given in the Annals, that caused the capture of Pierre Raimbault, near Northfield, in 1747. In 1744, he buried his daughter Kezia in Keene at the age of
16 years of age and ina son, Benjamin, three years old. He buried his wife, Dorothy, in Keene in January 1753 and soon afterwards removed to Pembroke, MA. He was a Physician there in 1756, as appointed Surgeon's Mate, afterward Surgeon
(Chirurgeon) of Col. Joseph Thatcher's regiment in the expedition to Crown Point in 1757. In 1758, from March to November, he was surgeon of Col. Thomas Doty's regiment for the reduction of Canada. In 1759, March 31 to December 31, Surgeon of
Col. John Thomas' regiment in Halifax.
