OBITUARIES
Thomas W. Hall, 86, dies; wx-Naval officer, historian
SMITHFIELD -- Ret. Naval Cmdr. Thomas W. Hall, 86, of Putnam Pike, a former baseball player, historian, teacher, naval officer, raiser of English setters and genealogy enthuiast, died yesterday in the Veterans Administration Hospital after a seven-month illness. He was the husband of Florence (Farrier) Hall.
When Mr. Hall, who once described himself as one who "lived so much history," was asked last year how he accomplished so much, he declared, "You make the time, you manage it."
A graduate of Brown University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in history, Mr. Hall specialized in the American Revolution and the role the French colonies played in securing freedom for the colonies.
He had served on a committee formed by Governor Garrahy to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Comte de Rochambeau's landing in Newport and worked with Smithfield's 250th Anniversary Committee last year.
A sought-after lecturer, Mr. Hall had been a member of national and local chapters of the Huguenot Society.
He was president of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and a governor of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America.
As a young man, he played baseball in high school and at Brown. He later became semi-professional, turning down an offer to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He said he stayed in the semi-pros long enough to earn the money to buy land in Greenville, where built a house for his mother in 1931.
Later, he and his wife moved into the house, where he and his family raised prize winning English setters.
He was president of the English Setter Association of America and estimated that for about 10 years, he and his family averaged 50,000 miles a year traveliing to dog shows.
A man of many careers, Mr. Hall had worked as a teacher at Mount Pleasant High School and in New York City. He was also a member of the New York Univeristy athletic staff.
For more than 20 years, Mr. Hall was in the Navy on active duty and as a reservist. In addition, he was a naval liaison officer, speaking for the Navy's public relations department.
Mr. Hall's naval career, which began while he was at Brown, spanned both world wars. He was president of the Brown University Navy Club for nine years.
Born in North Providence, he was a son of the later George M. and Lucy (Merrill) Hall.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas W. Hall, Jr. of Foster; two daughters, Marsha Brown of Lafayette, Calif., and Bethany Mason of Yardley, Pa., nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held in Providence on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Manning Chapel at Brown University.
