    WORLD WAR II, KOREA

John Clifton Cherry, 90, of Pensacola, passed away peacefully, and surrounded by family on 12/29/2012.

John is predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Adeal Cherry; sister Maudelle; and sister Amatine.

He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Gresham Cherry, daughters Gail Cherry Rappa (Ray) and Cheryl Henderson Love, grandson Scott Richard Hall, great-grandchildren Nathan and Natalie Hall, and brother Floyd Cherry all of Pensacola, FL.

John C. Cherry was born in Pensacola, FL on December 23, 1922. He graduated from J.M. Tate Agricultural School and joined the U.S. Navy in March of 1941. He served aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-3) at the opening of World War II, and served aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) during the campaigns of the Eastern Soloman Islands and Guadalcanal in 1942 - he narrowly avoided death from a Japanese dive-bomber from the later battle. He continued to admirably serve his country in the Navy until his retirement as a Chief Petty Officer in 1961. John Cherry went on to become a civil service employee at the Naval Air Rework Facility at N.A.S Pensacola until his retirement in 1978.

John was an avid deer hunter and fisherman all of his life - not many young men could throw a cast net quite like him, even into his 70's. He also had a love of gardening and caring for the many trees in his Pecan Orchard. Following the retirement of his wife Evelyn in 1982, they spent many great years together fishing and traveling the country in their motor home.

The visitation will be held at OakLawn Funeral Home[ 619 New Warrington Road Pensacola, FL on January 7th, 2013 beginning at 10:00 a.m. with service at 11:00 a.m with Dr. Gregg McBride officiating. Internment to follow at Barrancas National Cemetary with full military honors at 11:45a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Bellview Baptist Church 4750 Saufley Field Rd, 32526.
