    Notes:

    From FindaGrave:

Lawyer, Stockbroker, Thoroughbred Racing Enthusiast. Winston Churchill's maternal Grandfather.

Leonard Jerome was the son of Aurora Murray and Isaac Jerome. Leonard was born November 3, 1817, on a farm in upstate Pompey Hills, New York, (near Syracuse), and went on to study law, graduating from Union College in Schenectady, New York.

As a young man, he and his brother Lawrence moved to Palmyra, New York, to work in their uncle Hiram's law office, before Leonard set up practice in Rochester, New York. While living in Rochester, Jerome became involved in local politics and the newspaper business. founding the Rochester Daily American. He later sold his interest in the paper and moved to New York City, where he became a notable and flamboyant stock market speculator and promoter, becoming known as "The King of Wall Street". In the process, over his career, Jerome made— and lost— at least three fortunes.

A patron of the arts, he was the founder of Manhattan's Academy of Music. It has also been alleged that Jerome had an affair with the famous Swedish soprano, Jenny Lind— for whom his eldest and most famous daughter, Jennie, was named.

Leonard Jerome was also an avid sportsman and enjoyed yachting with his friend, William K. Vanderbilt. They, along with their friends and partners August Belmont and William Travers, had a special passion for thoroughbred horse racing, and helped found the American Jockey Club.

In purchasing The Bathgate estate and mansion near Old Fordham Village in Westchester County, Jerome was instrumental in building the Jerome Park Racetrack in what is now The Bronx, in conjunction with fellow financier August Belmont, Sr., where the first Belmont Stakes was held in 1867. A resident of Brooklyn, along with William K. Vanderbilt and other investors, he founded the Coney Island Jockey Club, which in 1884 built the Sheepshead Bay Race Track.

In 1849, he married Clarissa Hall (1825-1895) with whom he had three lovely daughters who were acclaimed wherever they went, becoming known as 'the Good, the Witty and the Beautiful.' The eldest, Jennie ('the beautiful'), married Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill, the younger son of the Duke of Marlborough, and gave Leonard Jerome two grandsons: Winston Churchill, later Prime Minister of Great Britain, and a second son, John (known as "Jack" in the family).

The second daughter, Clara— also known as Clarita-- ('the good') married Moreton Frewen (1853-1924), who had squandered his capital on gambling, sports and a series of failed money-making schemes.

The youngest, Leonie ('the witty') married Irish Baronet Sir John Leslie, 2nd Bt. (1857-1944). They had 4 sons, including Shane Leslie, who later converted to Catholicism and became a well-known writer. In later life. Leonie became a good friend to Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught –  a younger brother of Edward, the Prince of Wales (who became a great friend, in turn, to Leonie's sister Jennie).

Leonard Jerome's wealth afforded his daughters the opportunity to spend much time in Europe, particularly in Napoleon III's France, where they associated with the aristocratic elite of the day.

Some interesting historical footnotes: The Jerome Mansion, on the corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street, had a full theatre and even horse stables, as well as a beautiful view of Madison Square Park. It was later sold and housed a series of private clubs. Some of the funds from the sale helped support the country lifestyle of Winston Churchill, prior to his rise to political power. The mansion was torn down in 1967.

Jerome Avenue in Brooklyn is named in Leonard Jerome's memory, as is Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. In the Bronx,

The Old Bathgate mansion served as a summer home for the Jerome family and their friends. Jerome Park, which was built on the estate, was once the site of a horse racing track, which was replaced by the Jerome Park Reservoir. In the early 1900's, The Old Bathgate mansion would later be razed and replaced by The Kingsbridge Armory.

Leonard Jerome died on March 3, 1891, at the age of 73 in Brighton, England. His body was brought home for interment in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

    Notes:

    From Findagrave:

    Author, British Social Figure.

She was born Jeanette Jerome, the eldest of three daughters in a mansion on Henry Street, Brooklyn New York, to prosperous financier Leonard Jerome and Clara Hall, a socially inclined mother.

Leonard Jerome was known by the nickname 'The King of Wall Street' and was a patron of the arts who founded the American Academy of Music and then as an avid sportsman the American Jockey Club.

Jeanette (Jennie) attended the best New York finishing schools. On a trip to Paris with her mother, her beauty and elegant manner caught the attention of Lord Randolph Churchill, son of the Duke of Marlborough. They were married at the British Embassy (age 20) in Paris while acquiring the title 'Lady Randolph Churchill'.

He was active in British politics but Jennie rarely became involved but was an outspoken opponent of women's right to vote. Consequently, she and her son Winston were often heckled by enraged suffragettes.

The marriage produced two sons and the elder, Winston, became prime minister of Great Britain.

She was the social success of London but became a widow at a young age. After Lord Churchill died in 1895, she occupied herself by editing a short-lived literary magazine and writing several books and plays. After her book entitled 'Reminiscences of Lady Randolph Churchill' was published, she penned a play 'Her Borrowed Plumes' which starred Mrs Patrick Campbell and then a second 'The Bill.' Her collection of articles 'Short Talks on Big Subjects' were published in Pearson's Magazine and some of her quotes remain famous today, such as 'There is no such thing as a moral dress-it's the people who are moral or immoral' and 'Treat your friends as you do your pictures and place them in their best light.'

She was influential in the uppermost British social and political circles which greatly helped Winston Churchill in the early stages of his career. Jennie was very patriotic and during the Boer War she organized the purchase and commissioning of an American constructed 200 bed hospital ship name 'The Maine,' and then headed to South Aftica to inspect the vessel prior to it being placed in service.

She was tabloid material after the death of her husband. She had numerous lovers and admirers including Kind Edward VII and King Milan of Serbia.

She married twice more, her second to a captain in the Scots Guards ended in divorce. A third husband was a British civil servant and they lived in Nigeria with the marriage lasting until her death.

Although she was not entitled to her royal title, she continued to be known as 'Lady Randolph Churchill.'

Poor health plagued her and after surgery in London to remove a gangrenous leg she passed away at age sixty-seven.

Although out of the Churchill loop, Jennie was buried in the Churchill plot at St. Martin's Churchyard.

Postscript: The Jennie Jerome Playground in Brooklyn is named for the mother of Sir Winston Churchill and is located next to Jerome Avenue which is named for her father. She has been remembered recently in many ways: Lady Randolph Churchill was portrayed in the television series, 'Jennie' by Lee Remick and then by Anne Bancroft in the film 'Young Winston' and biographies have been published; 'Lady Randolph Churchill' by Anita Leslie in 1969 - 'Jennie' a 2 volume publication by Ralph G. Martin in 1969 - 'Jennie, Lady Randolph Churchill: A Portrait with Letters' by Peregrine Churchill and Julian Mitchell in 1974.

    Notes:

    From FindaGrave:

    British Prime Minister.

He led Great Britain through the Second World War and during the first two years while the country was the sole resistance to German Nazi dictator Adolph Hitler while enduring intense fire bombings by Nazi Air force planes. With the war near its end, he helped broker the peace agreements which led to the partitioning of Europe by Russia and the west and it was Churchill who coined the term 'iron curtain', referring to the demarcation between east and west Europe.

He was the son of Randolph and Jennie Churchill born in Blenheim Palace, in Oxfordshire, England. He a noted politician and she an American the daughter of Leonard Jerome a New York businessman born at 426 Henry Street, Brooklyn where the home stands today with a plaque attesting to this event.

Educated at Harrow, he graduated from Sandhurst, then joined the army serving in Cuba and in South Africa where he was taken prisoner during the Boer War. His political career began with election to Parliament in 1900. Other positions followed: lord of the admiralty, secretary of state for war and air and then Chancellor of the Exchequer. Semi-retired, World War II hostilities dictated his return to his old post first lord of the admiralty.

When Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain resigned in disgrace in 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister, and remained through the end of the war. In the postwar, his party lost control of the Parliament and he was out of power. Six years later, he again assumed the reigns of power as prime minister strongly supporting initiatives for the defense of Western Europe against communist aggression.

He was knighted in 1953 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature for his chronicles of the war years.

In poor health, he left politics for good in 1955 and spent most of his retirement in southern France. While in England, his residence was located at Chartwell House in Kent where the family lived from its purchase in 1922 and where he suffered his final stroke that resulted in his death. He lingered for nine days dying at age 90, seventy years to the day of his father's death.

His body lay in state in Westminster Hall for three days followed by a state funeral service at St Paul's Cathedral. The procession leading to his burial place was elaborate and planned so as many as possible could witness this historic event. His coffin passed down the Thames, the shores lined by millions, on a barge with the cranes of London's docklands bowed in salute. At Waterloo Station, the casket was placed on a special funeral train for the final leg home.

Although offered many famous sites for his burial, he had chosen the churchyard at Bladon near Blenheim Palace which is the burial ground of the Churchill family. There is also a memorial for him at Guildhall in London.

Postscript: Churchill was a constant visitor to America either on official business or because of his American roots. In 1946, little Westminster College with an English heritage invited him to speak. Instead of delivering a brief talk, he gave a major foreign policy statement, the Iron Curtain Speech, 'From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent...' The Cold War began which lasted forty years.

Many monuments have been constructed around the world to Churchill but none as significant as what graces the little campus in Fulton, Missouri. Dedicated in 1969 and known as the 'Winston Churchill Memorial and Library,' a little rundown 12th century structure 'Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury' was relocated to Fulton from the middle of London. The historic church had the touch of Sir Christopher Wren who redesigned it in 1677. Today, it is a museum filled with artifacts and information relating to the life and times of Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill himself was intrigued by the idea of a restored Wren church to be located in America's heartland and commented, ' It may symbolize in the eyes of the English-speaking peoples the ideals of Anglo-American association of which rest, now as before, so many of our hopes for peace and the future of mankind.'

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy named him 'Honorary Citizen of the United States' but too ill to attend a White House ceremony, his son and grandson accepted the award.

His duties led to posts on both the Western Front and at Gallipoli. In 1918, for his service during the war, he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), and the French Army bestowed upon him the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour. From Findagrave:

Winston Churchill's last surviving daughter, Mary, Lady Soames, has died at the age of 91.

She passed away peacefully at her west London home yesterday evening surrounded by her family, after a short illness.

She was the youngest of the five children of the wartime prime minister and his wife Clementine.

One of her sons, the Conservative MP Nicholas Soames, said: 'She was a truly remarkable and extraordinary woman, who led a very distinguished life.'

Mary Churchill worked for the Red Cross and the Women's Voluntary Service from 1939 to 1941, and joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service with whom she served in London, Belgium and Germany in mixed anti-aircraft batteries, rising to the rank of Junior Commander (equivalent to Captain).

She also accompanied her father as aide-de-camp on several of his overseas journeys, including his post-VE trip to Potsdam, where he met with US president Harry S Truman and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

She married the Conservative politician Christopher Soames (later Baron Soames) in 1947 and they had five children - Nicholas, Emma, Jeremy, Charlotte and Rupert.
