    Notes:

    Nathan Smith (1762-1829)

Nathan Smith was one of New England's best-known and respected physicians. He was a skilled surgeon, teacher, writer, and practitioner. At a time when most American physicians were poorly educated, he single-handedly founded Dartmouth Medical School and co-founded the University of Vermont Medical School, the medical school at Bowdoin College, and the Yale School of Medicine, leading historians to dub him the "Johnny Appleseed of American medicine".

Smith first began work as a surgeon in Chester, Vermont at age 21. He later went to the Harvard College's medical department where he obtained his MB in 1790. Smith was the third graduate of Harvard's medical department. He was later awarded an MD by Harvard in 1811. In 1803 Smith had gone to the University of Edinburgh where he attended medical classes for a year.

He developed important scientific principles in relation to the pathology of necrosis, on which he founded a new and successful mode of practice. Using the procedure he saved from amputation the leg of the future Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, who was then a child.

He was ahead of his time in insisting that doctors practice "watchful waiting" and emphasizing patient-centered care.

He published Practical Essays on Typhus Fever in 1824. His Medical and Surgical Memoirs, published posthumously by his son Nathan Ryno Smith in 1831, recounted his extensive experience as a physician in America during its formative years as the United States. Smith's four sons all became physicians, the most prominent being Nathan Ryno Smith.

    Notes:

    David Solon Hall Chase Smith

For nearly thirty years Dr. Solon Smith, as he was called, was the leading physician and surgeon of Sutton, Mass.

He graduated from Yale Medical College, class of 1816. He was the eldest son of Dr. Nathan Smith, founder of Yale and Dartmouth medical schools. His thorough training and the prestige of his father's fame brought him also a large consultation practice at a distance from his home.

"He was distinguished as a naturalist, being intimately acquainted with animal nature, birds and reptiles, and, having made a special study of botany, could classify and give the medical properties of nearly all the plants of this country."

His historian, from whom we quote, said of him, "Like his father he was a great man but never became rich."

His home life was clouded by sorrow, for he outlived all five of his children, and his experiences, although at times full of romance, were also full of pathos.

In 1848 he removed to Providence, where, eleven years later, he died, aged sixty-four years.

Note: Married a second time to Mrs. Fanny Wood, on June 19,1851, & married a third time to Annie M White, on Dec 2,1855.

    Notes:

Marvin Smith was a physician settled in practice in Westfield, MA.

He was killed at Norwalk, with many other physicians, by the cars in which they were riding falling through an open bridge, as they were returning form a medical convention held at New York. The draw bridge had been withdrawn, and no signal was given to the cars and they ran off into the river.

A son of Dr. Marvin Smith, in 1873, occupied his grandfather's chair as Professor of Theory and Practice of Medicine at Yale College.
