According to the newspaper, in December 1873 five of his had children scarlet fever.
One of his daughters married a Fay, one married a Brewer
In 1894 he was on the church committee for Union Church.
This is interesting...in 1891 he went to Detroit for a few days to attend an encampment of the GAR. In 1894 he was made a member of the F.D. Hammond Post GAR in Chatham.
In late January 1900 he underwent an operation (no specifics) and was supposedly recovering quite well.
Apparently George's wife of 4 months committed suicide by drowning in April 1900. She was 23 years old and thought to be temporarily insane by illness. She was the daughter of George Bowes of New Sharon, ME.
I did find George widowed in the 1900 census.
Helen got a whopping $88 pension when John died.
Josiah married Jessie Walker on February 17, 1917.
Here is his death notice; looks like John died on February 25, 1900.
Barnstable Patriot, March 5, 1900
A telegram received 25 ult. announced the death of John Wesley Greenleaf, at the Massachusetts General Hospital that morning. His body was brought home that Monday afternoon and the funeral took place at the Union Church Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Greenleaf did not rally from the operation performed on him, owing to the weakness of his heart. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure. Mr. Greenleaf served in the Civil War. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn his demise.
A book written about the Howes Family in America, written by a family member in 1893. They traced their lineage back to 1066 England. Betsey Howes Greenleaf (John's mother) is a descendant of Thomas Howes, who came to Yarmouth (known as Nobscussett) in 1639. First, here's more info on John, as provided in this book:
John's parents are Simeon and Betsey Greenleaf. I found them on Find A Grave - her memorial is linked to his - and his tombstone reads Simon...so at least you can John to his parents.
Here's where it gets fun. Betsey Greenleaf was the daughter of Alvan Howes and Mercy Collins (John's grandparents). So Betsey Howes married Simeon Greenleaf, and Simeon's son John married a Howes...LOL
John's aunts and uncles (in case you come across any of these names):
George Howes - married to Martha Knowlton
John Howes - married to Anna Dutton
Lot Howes - married to Loretta George
Mary Howes - married to Oren Hebard
Lydia Howes - married to Seth Howes
As for Helen Howes (John's wife), she is the daughter of Uriah and Sally Howes. And yes, Helen's family is actually related to John's mother's family.
Tracked back thru seven generations of family but I finally figured out how John's mother and his wife were related. His mother, Betsey was an eighth generation Howes, his wife, Helen was a seventh.
Thomas Howes (married to Mary Burr), the guy who came to Yarmouth in 1637 had three boys, one of which was Joseph Howes, and he married Elizabeth Mayo.
Joseph and Elizabeth were Helen's gggg-grandparents, and also happened to be Betsey's ggggg-grandparents. Helen was related thru their son Samuel, Betsey thru their son Joseph.
So I guess that makes them fifth cousins once removed..
