- GERALDINE JOYCE MONETTE
ASHLAND '96 Geraldine Joyce Monette, 78, of Forest View Circle, passed away April 13, 2007, with family at her side at Cary Medical Center, Caribou.
She was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Ashland, a daughter of Charles Percy and Margaret Mary (Flinn) Colbath.
She was educated in South School, Ashland before moving to Boston, where she worked for a resort hotel that transferred her to Lake George, N.Y. It was at Lake George that she met her husband, Harry Joseph Monette. Upon their marriage they resided in Mooers, N.Y., where they operated a dairy farm and raised five children.
Her husband passed away in 1974, and she continued to reside in New York until 2003, when she returned to Ashland, there pursuing her love of painting. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, listening to music and singing. The support and love of extended family and special friendships, both childhood and new, were precious to her. Social gatherings at the local Fish and Game Club brought her great enjoyment. Uncommon to young women of her time, Geraldine took flying lessons from 1940 to 1941. She was simply fascinated by flight and flying machines. On occasion she would reminiscence about the exhilaration of being at the controls of a biplane.
Survivors include her children, Charles Monette of Champlain, N.Y., Ellen Monette of Hiram, Margaret Monette of New York, Thomas Monette of Round Rock, Texas and Bernadette Monette of West Baldwin; brothers, Charles Colbath of Osterville, Mass., Alfred Colbath of Lady Lake, Fla., Terrance Colbath of Falmouth, Mass., and Richard Colbath of Sheboygan, Wis.; sisters, Katherine Campbell of Natick, Mass., MaryLou O'Brien of Watertown, Mass., and Beverly Kiley of Framingham, Mass.; two grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry; brothers, Dale and Malcolm Colbath; and sister, Adele Pendleton.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no services. Family and friends will gather in Ashland in the summer to celebrate her life. Contributions in her memory may be made to Aroostook River Fish and Game Club, P.O. Box 765, Ashland, ME 04732.
