At the time of his enlistment in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Ira gave his occupation as clerk. On 6 Aug 1862 Ira mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was 21 years, 11 months and 12 days old. On 15 Nov 1863 Ira ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by transfer to the Veterans' Reserve Corps.
