- Grandfather Robert was born Robert Charles (though he apparently never used, or even acknowledged, his middle name, which nevertheless appears on his birth certificate) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to an immigrant family from Gera, in Reuss (in present day Germany). The Kubereks were German speakers and stoneworkers by trade. Robert's father, Charles 'Charlie', was a stone mason while his grandfather, Joseph, was a "maurer," or bricklayer, in his homeland. Serving at different times in two branches of service, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, Robert also spent two years at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) before money ran out and he had to discontinue his education.
Robert met and married Bernice Effie Hall, of Atkinson Maine, after an intense, but traditional courtship by correspondence, and had two children, Robert Jr. and Bernice. He was a machinist and worked for many years at the Boston Naval Shipyard, and eventually rose to the position of Leading Man. He valued education and thrift highly and successfully instilled these values in his children and grandchildren, living to see his son, Robert Jr., graduate from Yale University on an ROTC scholarship and go on to a successful career in the Navy and in Aerospace. Though he struggled through financial hardship probably for much of his life, Grandfather died owing nothing to anyone as it was his earnest desire not to burden his children with his passing. He died of complications from diabetes as, coincidently, had his father-in-law, George Washington Hall.
