  • Notes
    • From FindaGrave:

John Coolidge, the oldest living offspring of former US President, Calvin Coolidge, died at the age of 93 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

By all accounts, John was as taciturn as his father Calvin, the former Mass. Governor & 30th President of the US.

John was an executive with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and President of Connecticut Manifold Forms Co. untill 1960, when he reopened a small dairy business under the name of Plymouth Cheese Corp. in Plymouth, Vt. The business was started in 1891 by his grandfather, John C. Coolidge and four other farmers. He continued to run it well into his 80s.

It was in the old white clapboard homestead up the road from the factory that his father, then Vice President, took the oath of office to become President. He was vacationing there when he got the news of Pres. Harding's death. The oath was given by Calvin's father, a notary public, by the light of a kerosene lamp in the early morning hours of August 3, 1923.

In many ways, John was a carbon copy of his father. Modest and of a retiring nature, he was short on words but long on Yankee conservatism. John's mother was a musical, fun-loving woman. John graduated from Amherst College in 1928.

Well into his 90's, he still shuttled occasionally from his home near the family homestead in Plymouth Notch, Vt. to collect his mail. Often, residents reported, he was charming and outgoing, but sometimes he was not.
