  • Notes
    • Several of his descendants changed the name to Howard and continued it for several or many generations. Some changed back to Hayward. It is possible that William was related to Thomas Hayward of Bridgewater. There was some visiting between the two families and some inter-marriage. On 19 Mar 1648, William bought 20 acres of upland in Braintree "being as it were a neck of land, having the river on the east" from John Whitman of Weymouth. In 1691 his grandson, Jonathan Hayward, received a confirmation of the above from the same John Whitman, also some salt mrsh adjoinging, in each transaction. This homestead remained in the family for generations. It lies on Fore River at the mouth of Pease's or Hayward's Creek just within the present bounds of Braintree where part of the Fore River ship yard now is located. The last occupant of the Hayward name was Miss Annah Hayward who died in Nov 1936 and whose house stands on the west side of Quincy Ave south of Hayward's Creek.

Administration on his estate granted to his widow---Inventory, 195 pounds, 5 shillings. Dwelling house, garden and orchard, 35 pounds. Other lands, 52 pounds. 4 oxen, 18 pounds. 4 cows and 2 heifers, 5 pounds, 10 shillings. Indian corn growingk 16 pounds. Wearing apparel, 4 pound and 18 shillings. Books, 7 pounds. 1 pair stockings, 4 shillings. Feather bed, 7 pounds 16 shillings. Flock bed, 3 pounds 12 shillings. 2 chairs, 3 brass caldrons, 1 brass pot, pewter, 1 silver spoon, warming pan, glass, earthen ware, etc.
