    • Bernard Capen's grave marker is the oldest known tombstone in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It is now in the New England Historical Genealogical Society Headquarters in Boston, MA. A new stone now stands in the cemetery. See Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John 1630, Vol. 12 and the Halls of New England by Rev. David B. Hall, 1883 under the Halls of Rehoboth section.

      Bernard Capen was granted land in Dorchester, MA on 5 Aug 1633. He died three on 8 Sep 1638 at the age of 76. The original house was built in 1633 and had a large addition made to it about 100 years later. It stood on the same spot in
      Dorchester until 1909 when it was moved to Milton, MA.

      Bernard Capen's grave is in the Old North Burying Ground in Dorchester. The original inscription reads "Body of ___pen aged ______ied ye ______er 1638 ______Joan _____aged." The stone in the north burying ground that replaced the original
      now reads: "Here lies the bodies of Mr. Barnard Capen & Mrs. Joan Capen his wife. He died Nov 8, 1638, aged 76 years & she died March 26 1653 aged 75 years."
