22 Apr 1919
Elmer Allen Thayer, formerly of this city, died at his home in Brookline, Mass. after an illness which lasted many months. Mr. Thayer was the son of the late Allen and Ellen M. (Cooke) Thayer, and was born in this city Sept. 22, 1860. He attended the local public schools and graduated from Woonsocket high school in 1877. He married Fannie Ellen Morse of Brookline, Mass. on May 21, 1890 in Brookline. The couple have one daughter, Helen Morse Thayer.
For many years, Mr. Thayer conducted a grocery store in Woonsocket at the corner of Main and Railroad Streets. About 10 years ago, he left this city and became head of the fruit department in the store of the Shepard company at Providence, where he remained until last September, when ill health compelled him to retire from active business. At this time he, with his wife, moved to Brookline to be with their daughter, who is in the public library in that city.
Mr. Thayer was prominent in fraternal circles and was a member of Morning Star lodge A.F. and A.M., Union Royal Arch chapter, Woonsocket commandery, Knights Templar, and the Appendant Orders, and Woonsocket Council, Royal and Select Masters. He was also a member of the Mystic Shrine and Royal Arcanum.
Mr. Thayer was a man of sterling character and cheerful disposition, and made many friends in the communities in which he lived. He was held in high esteem by his business and fraternal associates because of his strong integrity. Through a long and painful illness he was optimistic and cheerful to the end. His loss will be felt by his numerous friends and former associates in this city, Providence and Brookline.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Thayer is survived by two brothers, Henry J. of Putnam, Conn., and Fred I. of Worcester, Mass., the latter formerly a compositor with the Woonsocket Call, and a sister Mrs. Wendell A. Mowry of this city.
The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church, this city, at 11 o'clock Thursday morning with burial at Millbury, Mass.
