  • Notes
    • From FindaGrave:

Benjamin was the son of Issacher and Mary (Hodgkins) Lane. Church records show he was baptized August 1, 1762 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. His siblings: Issacher Jr, Joseph, and Mary.

As young men, Benjamin and his brother Issacher Jr. moved to Penobscot Bay's Fox Islands shortly after the American Revolution. The largest of these was settled permanently in 1765 and incorporated as Vinalhaven in 1789.

On December 10, 1789, he married at Vinalhaven, Margaret Hall of Matinicus Island, daughter of Ebenezer Hall III and Susannah Young. They became the parents of seven children: Margaret, Benjamin Jr, Susanna, John, Joseph, James A. and Timothy.

"Benjamin Lane brother of Isacher, was born 1762. He was probably a native of Massachusetts, and came here after the Revolutionary War. His wife was Margaret Hall, of Matinicus, and they had seven children. He settled on Griffin's (Lane's) Island, which he purchased from Thaddeus Carver. He died in 1842, his wife having passed away five years before." -- from "A brief historical sketch of the town of Vinalhaven," page 44

"Benjamin Lane settled his family on Griffin's (Lane's) Island, which he purchased from another early settler, Thaddeus Carver, for a new milch cow and a heifer..." -- from "Stories from the Maine Coast: Skippers, Ships and Storms," page 14.

Consult "Lane genealogies," vol. 3, pgs 171, 188, 199, 228, 276 for history and biographies of Benjamin, his father Issacher, grandfather Samuel, great-grandfather Samuel and his 2x great grandfather, James. Also, NEHGR, vol. 42, pgs 141-152.
