Verna, known as the "Leather Lady," served as President of the Strafford County Craftsmen during the 1980s and exhibited her hand-carved leather work at area craft shows. She also served on the diaconate at the Milton Community Church and sang for a number of years in their choir. Verna was an election clerk for more than 30 years for the town of Lebanon for which she was honored in the dedication of the 2009 Lebanon Annual Report.
