      Lewis was the son of John and Mary Rawson Wheeler Putnam, born in New England Village, Grafton, Worcester County, Mass. His father, John, was the old miller of New England Village.

      Lewis was in the tailoring business in Westborough, Worcester and Boston.

      He married his first wife, Puah Bullard Mellen of Holliston, Middlesex County, Mass., and they had three children: Jane Mellen, b. 1832, Mary Mellen b. 1834 and Albert Lewis Putnam b. 1838, the third child and only son died in 1841 (same year as his mother - childbirth?).

      Lewis was married for the second time on 20 April 1844 to Elmira Parker of Southborough, daughter of William (Find-A-Grave Memorial #153114540 at Southborough Rural Cemetery, Worcester County, Mass.) & Sally Bellows Parker, and they had two children: Franklin Lewis b. 1845 and Henry Albert Putnam b. 1849.
