• xi. James Nichols, bapt. July 10, 1757; bur. at the Ancient Burying Ground Sept. 13, 1790, Æ. 34;
UPDATE: Barbour [Families of Early Hartford] claims James m. 1) Rachel ---, whose burial at Hartford's Ancient Cemetery on Oct 29, 1789 (Conn. Mag., 5(1899):243) is the "Wife of James Newell [Rachel], aged 25."
A James Newell subsequently m. June 20, 1791 at the Hartford 2nd Ch., Helen "McClean." That he m. 2) Bethiah Clay cannot be confirmed by any known record. On Apr. 2, 1796 at the Hartford 2nd Ch., Edmund Deming, of Hebron, Conn., m. the "Widow Bethia Nichols" of Hartford.
James is enumerated in the 1790 census at Hartford as 1-3-2-0-0 one line before the enumeration of the widow Eunice (Lord) Nichols as 0-1-1-0-0 [wife of George Nichols, James Nichols' cousin, son of James' deceased father Capt. William's elder half-brother Lieut. Cyprian Nichols, 3rd] James Nichols' 1790 census listing may represent his having a wife and children, but more likely includes some or all of the other known children of the widow Eunice (Lord) Nichols.
