      Capt. William Nichols, son of Capt. Cyprian Nichols, Jr. and Mary Spencer, bapt. at the Hartford 2nd Chh. Oct. 21, 1711. He was a mariner and died of fever at sea Sept. 3, 1767.

      Monday, November 9, 1767, Issue 150, page 2.
      HARTFORD, Nov. 9. On the 3d of September laft, died of a Fever, on his paffage from Ireland to Antiqua, in the 56th year of his age, Capt. WILLIAM NICHOLS of this Town.

      He died testate leaving a lengthy probate record, the estate deemed insolvent.

      Capt. William m. Mary Farnsworth Feb. 5, 1738/9 at the Hartford 1st Chh., dau. of Joseph Farnsworth and Mary Olcott, bapt. July 5, 1719 at the Hartford 1st Ch. She d. intestate Oct. 14, 1771 at Hartford, Æ 53. They had 12 known children, ten of baptism record at the Hartford 1st Ch.:

      • i. Rachel Nichols, bapt. Feb. 17, 1739/40; was a school teacher at Hartford where she d. unmarried July 29, 1777.

      • ii. William Nichols, Jr., bapt. Oct. 10, 1741; was an attorney and apparently died unm. and buried at the Ancient Burying Ground at Hartford Oct. 14, 1792, Æ. 53.

      • iii. Mary Nichols, bapt. Apr. 10, 1743; d. unmarried and buried at the Ancient Burying Ground Sept. 9, 1803, Æ 61.

      • iv. Abigail Nichols, bapt. Apr. 7, 1745, d. an infant Aug. 5, 1750, Æ. 6.

      • v. Sarah Nichols, b. before May 1, 1748, d. Dec 6, 1809 at Hartford, Æ 62; m. Oct. 28, 1766 at Hartford, John Jeffery of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, NY, who d. Nov. 10, 1801 at Hartford, Æ 59. They had children, but whether any survived beyond infancy has not been determined.

      • vi. Cyprian Nichols, bapt. June 18, 1749, d. about December 1750, age 6 mos.

      • vii. Abigail Nichols, bapt. Apr. 7, 1751, d. in infancy Apr. 14, 1752.

      • viii. An unbaptized infant dau. d. Feb. 8, 1753.

      • ix. Catherine "Caty" Nichols, bapt. Feb. 24, 1754; never married and d. Dec. 3, 1831, Æ 78; bur. with her brother-in-law and sister John and Hannah (Nichols) Hall at Hartford's Old North Cemetery.

      • x. Anna Nichols, bapt. Jan. 16, 1756, d. Oct. 23, 1811 at Hartford; m. Sept. 18, 1791 at Hartford as his 2nd wife, Roswell Stanley, s. of Augustus Stanley and Alice Seymour, b. circa 1746 at West Hartford, Conn. He d. Aug. 25, 1818 at Hartford. Children, if any, not traced.

      • xi. James Nichols, bapt. July 10, 1757; bur. at the Ancient Burying Ground Sept. 13, 1790, Æ. 34; UPDATE: Barbour [Families of Early Hartford] claims James m. 1) Rachel ---, whose burial at Hartford's Ancient Cemetery on Oct 29, 1789 (Conn. Mag., 5(1899):243) is the "Wife of James Newell [Rachel], aged 25." A James Newell subsequently m. June 20, 1791 at the Hartford 2nd Ch., Helen "McClean." That he m. 2) Bethiah Clay cannot be confirmed by any known record. On Apr. 2, 1796 at the Hartford 2nd Ch., Edmund Deming, of Hebron, Conn., m. the "Widow Bethia Nichols" of Hartford. James is enumerated in the 1790 census at Hartford as 1-3-2-0-0 one line before the enumeration of the widow Eunice (Lord) Nichols as 0-1-1-0-0 [wife of George Nichols, James Nichols' cousin, son of James' deceased father Capt. William's elder half-brother Lieut. Cyprian Nichols, 3rd] James Nichols' 1790 census listing may represent his having a wife and children, but more likely includes some or all of the other known children of the widow Eunice (Lord) Nichols.

      • xii. Hannah Nichols, bapt. March 2, 1760, d. June 3, 1817 at Hartford; m. John Hall, he prob. the s. of John Hall and Mary Willis, b. Jan. 22, 1753 at Middletown, Conn., He d. July 11, 1830 at Hartford. Children, if any, not traced.
