      WASHINGTON, Conn. ? W. Covington Hardee, 85, died Monday, Nov. 1, at the Kent Health Facility in Kent. He was the husband of Diana (Faulkner) Hardee.

      Mr. Hardee was born March 2, 1919, in Florence, S.C., son of the late Abram and Cornelia (Covington) Hardee. He graduated from Emory College and Harvard Law School, and after law school, he worked in private practice in both Boston and New York. During the 1940s and 1950s, he was a professor at Harvard Law School. He was a former chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Lincoln Savings Bank of New York, a member and former chairman of the board of directors of New Milford Hospital, and a former chairman of the New Milford Hospital Foundation. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a Knight of the Order of St. John, and had lived in Washington since 1960.

      Besides his wife of 28 years, he leaves four sons, John Lamont, Brian Schereschewsky, William Hardee and Scott Schereschewsky; eight daughters, Pam Jackson, Thrae Dulhin, Robin Swensen, Felicity Barry, Nell Nicholas, Meredith Templin, Catherine Charles, and Laura Doty; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

      Arrangements: Memorial service 11 a.m. Nov. 12 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington. Arrangements by Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

      W. Covington Hardee, 85, of Washington died Nov. 1 at The Kent. He was the husband of Diana (Faulkner) Hardee.

      Mr. Hardee was born March 2, 1919, in Florence, S.C., son of the late Abram and Cornelia (Covington) Hardee.

      He graduated from Emory College and Harvard Law School and worked in private practice in Boston and New York. During the 1940s and 1950s, he was a professor at Harvard Law School.

      Mr. Hardee was a former chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Lincoln Savings Bank of New York, a member and former chairman of the board of directors of New Milford Hospital, and a former chairman of the New Milford Hospital Foundation.     • Covington Hardee, Banking Executive, Dies at 85

      Covington Hardee, a lawyer who led one of Brooklyn's oldest banks, died Nov. 1 in Kent, Conn. He was 85 and until recently lived in Washington, Conn. The cause was heart failure, said his wife, Diana.

      In 1975, after being a trustee for several years, Mr. Hardee became chairman and chief executive of the Lincoln Savings Bank, a Brooklyn institution that expanded to serve all of New York City during his tenure.

      Mr. Hardee had previously been general counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad and advised clients in London, Brazil, Paraguay and Puerto Rico.

      William Covington Hardee was born on March 2, 1919, in Florence, S.C., and graduated from Emory University. He received a law degree from Harvard in 1943 and was a communications officer during World War II. He then taught at Harvard Law School before entering private practice.

      He was a director of the Diners' Club, chairman of the Brooklyn Museum's governing committee and a trustee of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

      After retiring from Lincoln Savings Bank in 1984, he directed the fund raising efforts of the New Milford Hospital Foundation.

      In addition to his wife of 28 years, Mr. Hardee's survivors include five children, Pamela Jackson, of Boston, Felicity Barry, of Amherst, Mass., Meredith Templin, of Mohnton, Pa., Nell Nicholas, of Cornwall, Conn., and William Hardee, of Middlebury, Conn.; seven stepchildren, Thrae Dulchin, of Manhattan, Robin Swensen, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., John Lamont, of Plainfield, N.J., Scott Schereschewsky, of Gulf Stream, Fla., Brian Schereschewsky, of Nantucket, Mass., Laura Doty, of Corvallis, Mont., and Catherine Charles, of Washington, Conn.; 17 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. His first marriage, to the former Georgina Hazeltine, ended in divorce. His second wife, the former Joan Chappell, died before him.

      Covington Hardee, an attorney who also headed one of the oldest banks in Brooklyn, N.Y., died November 1 at his home in Kent. Mr. Hardee, who was 85 years old, was the stepfather of Robin Swensen of Pound Ridge, N.Y.

      Mr. Hardee was general counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad before becoming chairman and chief executive of the Lincoln Savings Bank. He had been a trustee of the bank prior to that appointment and directed the bank's expansion to all of New York City.

      A graduate of Emory University in Georgia, he received his law degree at Harvard in 1943 and he was an Army communications officer during World War II. He then taught at Harvard Law School before going into his own practice.

      After retiring in 1984, he directed the fund-raising efforts of the New Milford Hospital Foundation.

      In addition to his stepson in Pound Ridge, he is survived by his wife, Diana Hardee; four daughters, Pamela Jackson of Boston, Mass., Felicity Barry of Amherst, Mass., Meredith Templin of Mohnton, Pa., and Nell Nicholas of Cornwall; a son, William Hardee of Middlebury, six other step-children, 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

      Mrs. Gibson Williams has announced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Georgina Hazeltine, to Ensign W. Covington Hardee, U. S. N. R., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hardee of Florence, So. Carolina. Miss Hazeltine is the daughter of Professor H. D. Hazeltine of Cambridge University, England, and the granddaughter of Mrs. George F. Graves.

      The bride-elect attended the Chatelard School in Switzerland and was graduated from Marlborough School in Los Angeles, in June 1941 from Bennington College. During the last academic year Miss Hazeltine has been at Simmons College School of Social Work.

      Ensign Hardee was graduated from Emory University and studied at the Harvard Law School until March of this year when he received his commission in the United States Naval Reserve.

      The wedding will take place in Cambridge, Massachusetts on September fifth.

      The Rev. Gardiner M. Day officiated for the marriage of Miss Hazeltie to W. Covington Hardee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abram L. Hardee, of Florence, S.C. A reception followed at the Harvard Faculty Club.

      The bride was given in marriage by her father and attended by Miss Evermond Hardee, sister of the bridegroom, as maid of honor; and the following as Bridesmaids; Miss Anne Forbes, of Cambridge; Miss Natalie Krug, Lexington; Miss Betty Stone, Attleboro; Mrs. Robert W. Day, Chestnut Hill.

      Covington Hardee, a Florence native who had a remarkable career in law and banking died of heart failure on November 1, according to his wife, Diana. He was 85 and lived in Washington, Connecticut.

      William Covington Hardee was born on March 2, 1919 in Florence, the son of A.L. and Nell Covington Hardee, and graduated from McClenaghan High School in Florence and Emory University in Atlanta. He received a law degree from Harvard in 1943 and was a communication officer during World War II.

      He taught at Harvard Law School before entering private law practice. He became general counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad and advised clients throughout the United States and in London, Brazil, Paraguay and Puerto Rico during a distinguished legal career. In 1975, after being a trustee for several years. Mr. Hardee became chairman and chief executive officer of Lincoln Savings Bank, a Brooklyn institution that expanded to serve all of New York City during his tenure. He was once pictured on the cover of New York Magazine which featured an article about his leadership of the bank and his many civic contributions. He was a director of the Diners™ Club, chairman of the Brooklyn Museum™s governing committee and a trustee of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. After retiring from Lincoln Savings Bank in 1984, he directed the fund raising efforts of the New Milford Hospital Foundation.
