      OBITUARY.

Josephine H. Merrill was born in Lisbon, Maine, March 18th 1836. Died in Mendota, Ill., April 28th 1899. She was married Oct. 24th 1858 to Joseph W. Adams, at Lewiston, Maine, where they resided until Feb. 1863. They then moved to Vermillion township, La Salle Co., Ill. and Oct. 1866 to Mendota where they have since resided. To these were born three children; Frank who died in infancy, Willis R. who was so suddenly taken from them in 1882, and Clara L who with the husband of the deceased remains.

This day, May 1st marks the anniversary of her formal entrance into the Lord's service. She was baptised May 1st 1854, united with Free Will Baptist church and remained a member of that denomination until that interest in this city became extinct. Feeling the need of chirch affiliation she then, February 6th 1876, united with the First Baptist chuurch of Mendota.

The funeral services of Mrs. Adams took place Monday, May 1st at 2 o'clock p.m. at the Baptist church. The pastor, Rev. J. H. Beaven being absent, Rev. R. L. Halsey, of Chicago and Rev. T. H. Allen of the Presbyterian church conducted the services. Mr. Halsey spoke from the text, "I am the way, the truth and the life" which were almost the last words spoken by the deceased. Mr. Allen spoke very touchingly of her life among us, especially referring to he connection with the "W.C.T.U." and the "Ladies Cemetery Improvement Association," both of which organizations were present in a body. Also of her earnest active co-operation in the Mission Societies and general work of her own church.

Beautiful floral tributes were presented by Home and Foreign Mission Societies of her church; by The W.C.T.U.; by the Ladies Cemetery Improvement Association of which she had been the honored president for several years; by the organization of Royal Neighobors and by individual friends.

Mrs. Adams was a true christian in every sense of the word, loved by all, living a life the influence of which will never end. Her departure will be keenly felt, not only in her own home, but in the church and whole community. A devoted faithful wife and mother, a loving friend, a helper in distress has passed away making earth the poorer but Heaven the richer and sweeter for her...
