PIONEER HOSTESS DEAD
Mrs. H.L. Gleason of Franklin Steele Hotel Days Passes Away
Mrs. H.L. Gleason, one of the oldest residents of Wayzata and a Minnesota pioneer of the fifties, died at Wayzata at 1 a.m. today, aged 84 years. Mrs. Gleason came to Minnesota in 1855 with her husband and family of four children, and settled in Winona. In 1865 they moved to Minnehaha Falls and for two years managed the old Franklin Steele house near the falls. This house was one of the historic hotels of the early days, but was destroyed two years ago. Two years later the family moved to Wayzata, where Mrs. Gleason has lived since. Her husband died in 1889.
Her maiden name was Persis Marble Chase. She was born in West Sutton, Mass., March 14, 1822, and was at the time of her death the nearest direct descendant of Aquilla Chase, who came to Massachusetts from England with the first settlers about 1620, and from whom all the New England Chases trace their descent.
She married Horace L. Gleason May 19, 1842, and came to Minnesota thirteen years later. There are three children living-E.B. Gleason, Mrs. Belle M. Hazen and Mrs. E.B. Sanders, all residents of Wayzata.
