      Captain Charles F. Hall was a well-known resident of San Francisco for 40 years. He was a licensed Master Mariner sailing steamships for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company on the west coast from San Diego to Alaska. In later years he commanded the steamship Edith piloting San Francisco Bay to Sacramento.

      He married Julia A. Mars in San Francisco, 1881. Julia and her sisters (Margarite & Ella) were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Timothy O'Malley-Mars and Julia Harrington. All 3 of the sisters lived in San Francisco for many years. Julia died 30 Nov 1921 in San Francisco. Captain Charles & Julia raised 4 sons; Capt William Alexander Hall, Edwin Herman Hall (SFFD), Charles Rogers Hall & Arthur Frederick Hall.

      Charles Hall was one of 10 children born to Simeon Hall & Lucy Wescott Dorr. Simeon Hall (b.1810) is a descendant of Hatevil Hall. Lucy Dorr, a descendant of Richard Dore of New Hampshire. Her family was involved in shipping there are many descendants, from Orland, Maine.

      Two of his brothers also came to San Francisco, Capt Andrew L. Hall & Capt. Edwin J. Hall.
