  From FindaGrave: From "Early Records of the Town of Portsmouth" it is learned what positions Philip Sherman held including being the first Secretary of the Colony of Rhode Island, or Recorder of the Colony 1648, and a representative in 1656. He was also a member of Court of Commoners and Council and King Philip's War. In addition he was: 1644-1657 Town Clerk 1650 & 1651 - Town Recorder 1651-1684 - Tax Assessor 1656 - Town Magistrate 1656 - 1673 Member of Town Council 1656 - 1657 Deputy to General Court Assembly of the Colony 1660 - General Courts of Trials I have also seen the last name written as Shearman.
